Quincy Adams Shaw Mckean (Nov 1, 1891 – Aug 1971), known as "Shaw", was from am old Boston family, a Harvard graduate (1913) and became a very wealthy banker. He was an accomplished sportsman, achieving considerable success as a horseman, a polo player, a tennis player. Shaw was also a breeder of Wire Fox Terriers and Afghan Hounds of international repute. Shaw was a descendant of Quincy Adams Shaw who had amassed wealth from family mining interests and who became one of Boston’s most philanthropic benefactors. Shaw was also a descendant of Thomas McKean, Chief Justice, Governor of Pennsylvania, and signatory to the Declaration of Independence.

We usually associate Shaw with his Prides Hill kennels located at Prides Crossing, in Boston, Massachusetts. Shaw owned another home in Boston, Massachusetts on Commonwealth Drive near to Shaw's business premises. Shaw was Chairman of the "Citizen's Committee of the Army and Navy Inc" in 1941-1942. The Mckeans ceased to live in Commonwealth Drive in the period 1931 - 1936 as the property was made available to a US Navy Commander in Chief. The Mckeans lived at Commonwealth Drive for a brief period in 1937, before eventualy returning to the Prides Crossing property.
Margarett Hunnewell
Sargent
http://www.afghanhoundtimes.com Prides Hill Pamphlet
In 1920 Shaw married Margarett Hunnewell Sargent (1892 - 1978) a famous artist, they had four children - two sisters Jenny and Margaret and twin brothers Shaw and Henry (usually referred to as "Harry"). Margarett was a stunningly beautiful woman, six feet tall and raven haired. Shaw courted her for eight years, eventually Margarett sent Shaw a telegram stating "I guess I will marry you.". Bit of trivia - the "'tt" in the spelling of Magarett's name is not a typo. Doubling the t's was apparently a family tradition)

Shaw's marriage to Margarett ended in divorce in 1947. Margarett was a brilliant and somewhat eccentric lady and she abruptly stopped painting in 1944 and took up gardening. She never fully explained why she stopped painting. Margarett reputedly hated Shaw's Wire Fox Terriers but loved the Afghans and delighted in letting the Afghans out to race across the lawn, to impress her dinner party guests!!. For the remainder of her life, Margarett struggled with alcohol addiction and depression and she was eventually placed in a sanitorium where she spent the remainder of her life. Honor Moore, (Margarett's Grandaughter and the author of "The White Blackbird") wrote to Margarett stating "I want one you painted" (for her first apartment). Honor was tentative because she knew Margarett had stopped painting and didnt know how many paintings there were, if any. The Blue Girl arrived unannounced weeks later with a note scrawled in pink on hot turquoise stationary in a wonderful Spanish frame. Honor peeled back the protective cardboard which revealed dazed black eyes staring as if interrupted. A stranger, huge black hat's shadows smudge the white forehead, lips set, red, disturbed. Color. Color. Light blue collars a pale neck, behind writhe thick green vines, exploding ultramarine blooms. Brown hair to the shoulder she sits, volcanic, holds the graceful white arm of an orange chair with both hands, as if to hold her to the canvas. Honor is twenty-one. This is my first adult intamcy with a woman who has given up"

"The White Blackbird" is the name given to Margarett by her art mentor George Luks. He painted the picture of her from memory. Margarett's grandaughter Honor Moore used the name for the title of her book about her grandmother.

For the very, very rich like Shaw's mother, nothing much changed after the Wall St Crash 1920. Margarett and Shaw did not go to Europe in 1930 or 1931 but they went to Cuba in 1932 and returned to Europe in 1933. Margarett kept her studio at St Botolph Street, but she and Shaw closed their Boston town house on Commonwealth Avenue in 1931, put it on the market, where it moldered unsold for years, and wintered at Prides Hill. In the wake of the crash, Shaw closed down the investment banking firm he started after the failure of Richardson, Hill and "pretty much retired" John Spanbauer said, to devote himself to "sporting interests" - fishing and hunting trips to Canada, golf at Myopia, bridge in the evening. Prides Hill Kennels was a going concern. Shaw's fox terriers with names like Bounce and Miss Barbarian were advertised monthly in the kennel pages of Vanity Fair, In 1928 a dog called Style won the Best American Bred Bitch at the Eastern Dog Club show in Boston where her competitors in other breeds were dogs shown by Shaw's North Shore friends. Katherine "Kay" Winthrop McKean
http://www.afghanhoundtimes.comKatherine
After Shaw and Margaret divorced in 1947, Shaw married Katherine "Kay" Winthrop . Kay and Shaw had 5 children together, the first being John McKean, born on August 7, 1948, the last being David McKean, born in 1956. Kay who was a top-ranked tennis player, was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts on July 17, 1914. She was one of six children born to Frederic Bayard Winthrop and Sarah Barroll Thayer. Through her father, she was a direct descendant of John Winthrop: the descendant line is Gov. John Winthrop, Gov. John Winthrop II, Magistrate Wait Still Winthrop, Her maternal grandfather was a banker and a railroad executive, Nathaniel Thayer III and through him, she was descended from the Van Rensselaer, Schuyler and Thayer families

Kay represented the USA at Wimbledon in 1936 and her double partner was Alice Marble. Kay was an active professional tennis player from 1931 to 1957. Kay entered U.S. Championships tournament every year from 1931 to 1947. She interrupted in 1948 since she was pregnant, and returned in 1952. Kay gave up competitive tennis in 1970, aged 56, but continued to play socially for many years later. In 1990, Kay was inducted into the New England Tennis Hall of Fame. Kay died on February 12, 1997, in Hamilton, Massachusetts

2.1 INTRODUCTION BY Q A SHAW MCKEAN
Who better than Shaw Mckean to introduce us to his beginnings in Afghan Hounds? First we have an article "Some Early Afghans" published in the canine press (date and name of publication unknown) written by Shaw. Coincidentally, we find another canine press article (this time in Popular Dogs, dated June 1956) "Shaw McKean reminisces about his early Afghans". The earlier article includes refrerences to Shaw's first two Afghan Hounds (Westmill Omar and Asra Of Ghazni, both UK imports. The latter article is mainly discussing the third Shaw UK import Badshah of Ainsdart. We have typed up Omar/Asra notes from the first article and include them here, followed by the 1956 article.

Date and publication unknown.

I am delighted to give you a few of my recollections of my early Afghans. Most of my breed records have been destroyed, so the following is largely based on my memory One day I have to thank my old friend George Thomas who called to ask me one day to drop in to his kennels to see a pair of Afghans he had brought from California. They were Westmill Omar and Asra Of Ghazni, the latter affectionally known as "Bibbles". George told me the pair had been bought over (from England) by Zeppo Marx. I fell in love with them and bought them with the understanding that George would be the breeder and owner of the litter that Asra was shortly due to whelp. Several of the litter were sold by George to my friend Bayard Warren. Asra lived to the ripe old age of 14 and produced 74 puppies, many of them champions. I felt the need for an outstanding dog of different bloodlines and told G.S.T. to be on the lookout while he was in Europe (1934). He cabled me from England that he had an outstanding dog that would meet my requirements, I cabled him back and told him to buy the dog. The dog was Badshah Of Ainsdart, or "Loppy" as I called him.

2. "Shaw McKean reminisces about his early Afghans"
Popular Dogs June 1956

Q. A. Shaw McKean reminisces about his early Afghans and tells most importantly about his purchase of Badshah of Ainsdart. “I had the need of an outstanding dog of different bloodlines to breed to my bitches and told George Thomas to be on the lookout. It took three years but as soon as I returned to the United States on the Europa, George arranged to have the dog sent to me. “Loppy and I became the closest of friends. He lived in my house, opened my doors, sat with me when I read or wrote, and evaluated my visitors. He was a born showman and I believe the first Afghan to go BIS in the United States. (Author’s note: the BIS was at North Shore KC in Masacuessets). He was a large dog, a pale brindle the color of smoke with magnificent movement and wonderful expression – he truly had the look of eagles.” McKean was serious about exercise and physical fitness for his dogs. “Show your dogs fit and strong and forget the fluffy ruffles” was a tenet he had learned from his good friend, George Thomas. The two men were devoted to Afghans and in addition to showing their dogs they thought it would be great fun to race their Afghans over the brush hurdles at the Wonderland Greyhound Racing Park in Revere, Massachusetts. They got the management to give the dogs some training on the mechanical rabbits and it was “wonderful to see six or seven Afghans, some of which were champions, take the hurdles at top speed". But when the Greyhound Racing Association got wind of the intrusion, the Afghans were expelled from the track.

2.2 PRIDES HILL KENNEL ACTIVE c.1916 - c.1946

Shaw's Kennel name was granted by the AKC in 1916. Shaw became actively involved in Afghan hounds with the acquisition of Westmill Omar and Asra Of Ghazni in 1932, and he remained active through 1946, We have found no newspaper archives about Shaw and his Afghan hounds (or indeed his Wire Fox Terriers) later than 1946. The year 1947 was a challenging year of change for Shaw, Margarett's mental health continued to decline, their marriage was disolved in 1947, and Shaw re-married later in 1947.

2.3 ZEPPO MARX, GEORGE THOMAS, BAYARD WARREN
We previously mentioned these three gentlemen as being pivotal in Shaw's introduction of Afghan hounds at his Prides Hill kennel. We thought it would be helpful to include some additional information about them -

ZEPPO MARX
Zeppo Marx of Marx Brothers fame imported two of the most significant Afghan Hounds in the USA from England in the spring of 1931. These two hounds were the dog Westmill Omar and the bitch Asra of Ghazni.. The Marx brothers were located in New York at this time, contracted to a NY movie studio. The Marx brothers moved to California later in 1931 to join a movie studio in Hollywood and took these two Afghan hounds with them. (One of Zeppo's humorous claims about his Afghan hounds was that he purchased them as "script writers" for their movies). The busy schedule of movie making and touring caused Zeppo to find a new owner for his pets. The new owner was George Thomas.. (Harpo Marx photo with Omar/Asra and article ). While in the care of George Thomas, Omar and Asra had mated. George called his friend Q A Shaw Mckean to enquire if he was interested in purchasing the pair. Shaw was very enthusiastic and George agreed to sell them to Shaw on condition that he (George) be listed as breeder of the as yet unborn litter. Shaw agreed. The litter of 4 bitches and 1 dog whelped at Prides Hill on the 1st April 1932. A dog and bitch (Rajah of PH, Amour of PH) were kept by Shaw, Clorinda, a bitch, is listed as owned by George, Another bitch Zara of PH, became the property of the White Sisters of Kandahar Afghan Hounds in New Mexico. A bitch, Barberry Hill Illusive became owned Mr Bayard Warren of Barberryhill kennel

GEORGE THOMAS
George Thomas was a breeder, judge and an international dog dealer. He frequently travelled to England to buy dogs for his American clients. He ran the "Vickery" kennels in Barrington Illinois. George emigrated from Ollerton in Nottinghamshire, England to Massachusetts, when he was 19 years old. George Thomas worked closely with his Brother In Law Richard Toon who owned the Endcliffe Terrier kennels in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. George Thomas set up many wealthy Americans with their first dogs, including Q A Shaw McKean (with his Wire Fox Terrier - Prides Hill Folly). Shaw used studs from 'The Vickery" kennels and his Ch Prides Hill Tweak Em is considered one of the most successful Wire Fox Terriers ever produced. George Thomas judged BIS at Westminster in 1917 & 1918.

George Thomas 1937

In 1934 Mrs Hartley Dodge (nee Geraldine Rockefeller), Giralda Farm Kennels, and founder of Morris and Essex dog show wrote about George Thomas - "The unanimous opnion of the fanciers is that you are one of the most unbiased of judges and will always put up a dog that you think best, regardless of breed" (LA Times, Dec 1933). GST as he was known to many was a famous dealer in dogs an had sold imported dogs for as high as USD 10,000 . GST was in his time the most experienced all breed Judge in the world. He has judged in Canada, Mexico, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, Belgium and of course the USA. In the 1937 season GST estimated his assignments would carry him approximately 40,000 files, he will also be judging in Australia and New Zealand this year. (Hartford Courant, 1937)

BAYARD WARREN (Barberryhill)
Bayard Warren was a lawyer from a family of prominent lawyers and politicians. His grandfather was the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom. His father founded the now famous Boston law firm of Nutter, McClennen and Fish in partnership with Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis. Bayard Warren's property was located at Prides Crossing (near Shaw Mckean's Prides Hill kennel) and was named "Barberry Hill" but his kennel name and therefore the dogs he bred were named "Barberryhill", i.e. one word. Mr Warren, as noted above, was the owner of Barberry Hill Illusive who was the dam of a very famous Afghan Hound - Barberryhill Dolly

When Dolly retired from the show world, she first lived with actor Charlie Ruggles at his kennels in Hollywood. Dolly then moved on and became owned by Venita Vardon Oakie (Oakvardon Afghan Hounds, Hollywood) . Barberryhill Dolly ended her days living at the kennels of Sunny Shay (Grandeur Afghan Hounds, Long Island, NJ). Mr Warren's primary breed was Sealyham Terriers and he won BIS at Westminster in 1924 with his Sealyham terrier Ch Barberryhill Bootlegger. A connection between Bayard Warren and Q A Shaw Mckean was the "Eastern Dog Club" (Boston). In 1920 Warren was President of the Club, and Mckean was the Vice President . Another connection between Warren and Mckean families involved joint travel overseas. In one such trip in the summer of 1921 they travelled to Europe, spending several weeks in England. A newspaper report for August 1921 confirmed the Mckeans were staying in Europe with the Warrens and the two families planned to return home together.

2.4 THE EARLY YEARS
Shaw had been involved as a breeder/exhibitor/judge of Fox Terriers 20 years before he acquired his Afghan hounds. Shaw was also a Board Director of AKC. In March 1922 the AKC revoked his judges license (we have, as yet been unable to find out why his license was revoked). Apparently he was "very bitter" about the revokation. Shaw got his judges license back prior to February 1924 as he judged Wires at WKC that year. Shaw's first Afghan hounds were Westmill Omar and Asra Of Ghazni , originally imported from the UK by Zeppo Marx in 1931, then sold on via George Thomas to Shaw in 1932. In 1934 Shaw added the English Champion Badshah Of Ainsdart who was selected for him by George Thomas. The earliest news archive we find for Shaw with his Afghan hounds is dated 23 February 1933 which mentions Shaw exhibiting Zara of Prides Hill, Amour of Prides Hill and Westmill Omar at the Eastern Dog Show where Westmill Omar went BOB. Zara and Amour were two siblings from the first breeding of Westmill Omar and Asra of Ghazni which whelped on 1st April 1932. We don't know the precise date that Omar and Asra were transferred from Zeppo Marx to George Thomas, or the precise date George transferred them to Shaw. Given that the duration of pregnancy for a dog is around 60 days and Asra was already expecting her litter (which whelped 1st April 1932) when Shaw purchased them from George Thomas, that suggests that Shaw took possession of them in January 1932? Badshah went BOB at WKC in 1935.

Asra Of Ghazni and Westmill Omar
http://www.afghanhoundtimes.com PHOTO Westmill Omar England May 1930

Asra produced 74 offspring during her 7 year breeding term 1932 - 1939. Omar was the intial and primary stud (42 offspring) but would eventually be displaced by Badshah (105 offspring). Badshah via Asra produced the foundation dog for the Kingway kennels. Of the Prides Hill bitches, Zahera (from the second 1932 litter by Westmill Omar x Asra Of Ghazni) was the most productive Prides Hill brood with 53 offspring in her 6 years breeding term (1932 - 1939). Zahera produced offspring that went to Kandahar, Arthea, Dellire, Walgrove, Kerrin, Arken and several other kennels. (Arken kennel was founded on the Prides Hill bred bitch Ku Mari Khyaam Of Arken (Badshah Of Ainsdart x Zahera Of Prides Hill, 1936). Rajah won the AHCA National Speciality three years running in 1942, 1943 and 1944, a record he would hold for over 70 years. The combination of Badshah and Zahera produced Ramy who became the first Afghan Hound to be registered in Canada and eventually became owned by Mrs. Viola Fielden of "Ku" Afghan Hound Kennels. Ramy made a significant contribution to the "Ku" breeding program and the establishment of Afghan Hounds in Canada. Ramy was also used by Mary Matchett (El Myia, Canada kennels) another Founding breeder in Canada. Ramy was bred by Mrs Margaret Nison (Bandra Ghur). Mrs Nison's kennels were originally located at Westport on the east coast , she then moved to New York before finally moving her kennels to New Mexico. Some of Mrs Nison's litters were bred at the Prides Hill kennel. Another kennel founded in Prides Hill stock was Al Baron's "Royal Irish" kennel who started out with Asoka Of Prides Hill (Badshah Of Ainsdart x Sultana Of Prides Hill, 1934) and Rheta's Roodles Of Royal Irish (Badshah Of Ainsdart x Kaccana Of Prides Hill, 1937), both hounds bred by Shaw at Prides Hill. It is self apparent, that, within just a few years of Shaw obtaining his first Afghans, his Prides Hill kennel were the primary source of stock for most of the other foundation era Afghan hound breeders in the USA.

George Thomas also brought over Badshah's litter brother - Tufan Of Ainsdart, who was purchased by Elizabeth and Amelia White (Kandahar) in New Mexico. We dont know if George originally purchased Tufan for Shaw and then sold him on to Amelia and Elizabeth White, or whether George in dog-dealer mode also had an order for an Afghan hound from the White sisters. In any event, Tufan went west to Santa Fe, New Mexico and produced many litters in parallel to his brother Badshah's production on the east coast. West coast breeders were able to incorporate Tufan into their breeding programs, thus incorporating both Ainsdart brothers in the development of their bloodlines. Mrs Nison mentioned earlier, bred a litter out of Tufan and a Badshah/Zahera grandaughter in 1937 which included the dog Yusseff, the foundation of the Elcoza Kennel. Tufan produced mainly cream, fawn or gold coloured Hounds. The rarer black or brindle were not bred from at Kandahar. At Prides Hill Badshah produced predominently cream, red, fawn but also occasional black, black and tan and brindles. News reports routinely mentioned Shaw taking as many as 10 gold Afghans to a dog show, such was his determination to exhibit and promote the new breed. . An interesting anecdote about Shaw's introduction to Afghan hounds occured in the late 1920's in Paris, France. A New York Socialite friend of the Mckean' s (Caresse Crosby) met Shaw during one of his visits to Paris in the late 1920's. Caresse wrore about it in her book "The Passionate Years, published in 1968" -"The Shaw MacKeans met their first black Afghan Hound with me in France".

Badshah Of Ainsdart Wins PremierAward at Myopia Club. Q A Shaw McKean's Afghan hound Badshah Of Ainsdart won the BIS prize in list of 633 entries at the inaugural exhibition of the North Shore Kennel Club before 2,000 spectators at the Myopia Hunt Club today Badshah Of Ainsdart, making his debut in the United States, was handled by Mr McKean. He was pushed for the title by Miss Elizabeth Loring's Newfoundland Waseeka's Sea King, a veteran performer in New England. The victor is nearly four years old and had the find reord of winning his championship abroad in two months.

2.7 ANOTHER USA SHOW REPORT ON BADSHAH 1935
"Providence County KC, March 17, 1935, Afghan Hounds
It was interesting to admirers of the Afghan Hound, a breed that is rapidly coming to the fore, to note that Quincy A. Shaw McKean's famous imported dog Badshah Of Ainsdart has no rival on this side of the waster. Badshah was outstanding at Westminter, went on to win at Boston and came back here today to top his breed. He was in splendid show form"

2.8 WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB 1935
At the Westminster Kennel Club show in 1934 there was just one Afghan Hound entered. The next year (1935), there were fourteen Afghan Hounds entered. This is a measure of how rapidly Q A Shaw Mckean of Prides Hill Kennels helped the breed become established in the USA. Here is a report from the 1935 Westminster Kennel Club Show - "Just one lone specimen of the Afghan Hound was on the bench last year (1934) and in marked contrast was the entry of fourteen grand specimens of this striking animal shown under Vinton P Breese in 1935. The Afghan has become a prime favorite in certain circles in New England and few who were at the Eastern Dog Club show last February will ever forget the impression made by the teams of four shown by Quincy A. Shaw McKean of Prides Crossing, Mass., Mr McKean is one of the staunchest supporters of the breed, and with Baynard Warren another Bay Stater, was the backbone of the exhibit here. Mr McKean had four benched and three were shown by Mr Warren. The former scored in dogs with his grand imported dog Badshah Of Ainsdart, which won the open class and went on to winners, best of winners and best of breed. Mr Mckean was reserve with his home-bred Kundah of Prides Hill, a year and a half old. Mr Warren took the honors among the bitches with another home-bred, his Barberryhill Dolly, the imported McKean Afghan bitch Asra Of Ghazni placed in reserve. (Source New York Times, February 1935)

2.9 BURJ OF AINSDART - LITTER SISTER TO BADSHAH AND TUFAN ALREADY IN THE USA 1931
We recently discovered a photograph and news comment about a litter sister of Badshah and Tufan of Ainsdart (Burj Of Ainsdart), and, surprisingly, she had been exported to the USA before the brothers were. According to the news archive narrative that accompanied the photo below, Burj had "recently" arrived from UK. The KC Breed Record Supplement details the transfer of ownership from Mrs Morris-Jones (Ainsdart) to Mr and Mrs Pell as occuring on 3rd March 1931, and that is consistent with the "recent" arrival narrative. The arrival of Burj also pre-dates Shaw's acquisition of his first Afghan hounds - (1932 for Omar/Asra, 1934 for Badshah) . We are still researching the Pell's and Burj, however early research suggests they were located in New York, or Massachussets- ie adjacent to where Shaw lived. Burj was exhibited at a Westchester Horse Show in June 1931, Westchester being on the suburbs of New York. It seems reasonable to conclude that likely Shaw or GST saw Burj Of Ainsdart at local shows such as Westchester prior to Shaw obtaining his imports. and that may have sparked Shaw's initial interest in the breed,? Hopefully we will learn more about Burj of Ainsdart and his owners and will update this page accordingly..

2.10 OTHER EARLY ERA AFGHAN HOUNDS AND KENNELS
Shaw was not the first importer/breeder of Afghan hounds in the USA. The Afghan hound first came to the USA in 1926 when Jean Manson (Cove, UK) visited and bought 12 Afghan hounds over with her .The first Afghan hounds exibited at Westminter KC were imported by Mr Abrams De Flandre Kenne). James Dignowty exhibited three Afghan Hounds ( Kabuter, Sahib, Kandahar, all of Bell Murray/Cove UK breeding) at WKC 1927/28. Another import shown at WKC `927/28 was Shahjehan Of Larkbeare (Imp UK) owned and entered by Sarah Wallah (Elenor Kennels). Another early Afghan hound in the USA was KasI Of Cove (bred by Jean Manson,UK) that was owned by Swedish Cinema Star Sigrid Holmquist and was exihibited at WKC 1927. An interesting dimension to this hound is that Kasi was eventually exported to Peru. Ovalley Farms Kennel was another importer/exhibitor at WKC 1927/28, The kennel owner was Joseph Brown Thomas Jnr and he was born in Boston, Massachusetts and attended Yale University. He was an accomplished breeder of fine dogs and hens (according to the NY Times in 1905). The Ovalley Farm Kennel owns the distinction of breeding the first ever litter of Afghan hounds in the USA born on 16th October 1927. Zun was exhibited at Philidelphia in 1926 with the owner listed as Louis J Murr. Louis, was associated with Zun of O’Valley Farm - his ‘ Romanoff"’ Borzois were founded on O’Valley farm stock. Louis was also a highly respected AKC judge and he had a large kennel of Borzois. None of the kennels (except Prides Hill) mentioned in this paragraph contribute to the pedigree history of the breed. Another early breeder was Caroline Hall RIchmond (Fatima Afghan Hounds), located in California, and who imported Afghan hounds direct from India in 1929. Fatima kennel also pre-dates Shaw's importation/ownership by a few years (but we should note that Shaw bred his Afghans before Caroline Hall Richmond started her breeding program).,

3 SOME NOTABLE PRIDES HILL AFGHAN HOUNDS

3.1 Westmill Omar, Asra of Ghazni, Badshah Of Ainsdart
Omar and Asra produced some 85 offspring in their various breedings. Both were exhibited, but it was perhaps, Badshah who was exhibited more frequently and became more well known in show circles. Badshah was the first Afghan Hound in the USA to go Best In Show (North Shore Kennel Club, MA, Aug 1934). He sired 30 offspring in his breedings with Zahera of Prides Hill plus another 55 offspring via his other breedings..

3.2 Amanullah Of Kandahar
Amanullah Of Kandahar (Badshah Of Ainsdart x Zahera Of Prides Hill) whelped 19th November 1933 and went to the White Sisters Kandahar kennel in New Mexico. Amanullah was the top winning Afghan hound throughout the 1930's

3.3 Zahera Of Prides Hill
Zahera Of Prides Hill (Westmill Omar x Asra Of Ghazn), whelped 17th November 1932. Zahera offspring produced foundation hounds for several other kennels. Zahera produced 8 litters and 53 puppies in total, Zahera produced 3 litters for Shaw's Pride Hill kennel, 3 litters for Dr and Mrs. Combs Arthea kannel, and 2 litters bred by Margaret Nison. Ch Yussef of Bandra Ghur (Tufan Of Ainsdart x Shabra, Aug 1937), was a grandson of Zahera , and was bred by Margaret Nison. He was a foundation dog for the Elcoza Kennel Yusseff was a popular stud dog used by several other kennels. His litter sister Flo Flo of Ghazni was a foundation bitch used by The Kench-Owen/Knudsens Riverside Kennel, Ch Kerrin Fachamo (Badshah Of Ainsdart x Zahera Of Prides Hill, Feb 1938), was bred by Dr & Mrs Combs (Arthea), and owned by Mr & Mrs Wiethoff of Kerrin kennels located in Detroit, Fachamo was a big winner - he won 16 BOB, 12 Group and 1 BIS Pontiac in 1939. He gained his US championship in less than a month at the young age of 8 1/2 months old and was the quickest winner of a US championship at that time. In 1940 he was shown in Canada where he went undefeated and gained his Canadian championship in October of that year. Eugene C Beck, a founder member of the Afghan Hound Club of America, President of the club in1942, and judge of the first AHCA Specialty in 1940 and again in 1955. Beck owned the Prides Hill bred dog Shaitan Beda whelped June 1936 out of Badshah Of Ainsdart x Zahera Of Prides Hill who was a foundation sire for Marjorie Walker's ("Far Away") kennel. A particularly famous bitch from this kennel was Far Away Loo who was one of the foundation hounds for Sunny Shay's Grandeur kennel. Another of Sunny's first Afghans was of Prides Hill breeding - Doreborn's Karya (Chad Of Prides Hill x Amita Of Prides Hill, June 1938) bred by Benjamin Decker (Jac-A-Leen). The legacy of Zahera is significant.

The pairing of Badshah and Zahera produced a particular characteristic in some of their offspring, acceptable in the day, but now deemed " undesirable" in the current USA breed standard. That characteristic was - "white markings", on the head, particularly a white stripe down the middle of the head. Some examples in section 4 below -

We find several more examples from the Badshah x Zahera breedings, so there is no ambiguity about where such markings first occured in the early days of the breed in the USA. You can read more about this topic and view the working documents of the breed standards committee

3.4 Kabul Of Prides Hill
Kabul Of Prides Hill (Westmill Omar x Asra Of Ghazn) whelped 17th November 1932 has the distinction of becoming the first Afghan Hound Champion in the USA which he achieved in October 1934

3.5 Rudiki of Prides Hill
One of the most famous and important Afghan hounds in the history of the breed. Hartford Courant 11 February 1940 - The Blakeen Kennels of Mr and Mrs Sherman R Hoyt, Katonah, N.Y. have purchased the Afghan hound, Ch. Rudiki of Prides Hill, recognized as the greatest living member of his breed in America. Under the ownership of Q.A.Shaw Mckean, Rudiki scored numerous breed and group wins, including best of breed and second in the hound group at the Westminster Show a year ago. He is entered at the Garden this week.

4 BADSHAH AND ZAHERA (OCCASIONAL "UNDESIRABLE" FACIAL MARKINGS

4.1 Occurance of white markings on head

Undoubtedly, the combination of Badshah and Zahera produced some of the most important Afghan hounds in the breeds history. This pairing had another feature, albeit one now deemed undesirable in the current USA breed standard - "white markings" on the head, particularly a white stripe down the middle of the head. Some examples below -

(Badshah Of Ainsdart x Zahera Of Prides Hill)

We find several more examples from the Badshah x Zahera breedings, so there is no ambiguity where such markings first occured in the early days of the breed in the USA. We don't find any such history in the UK of such markings, so it's a bit of a mystery as to how/why they occured. In modern times (1990's) we have seen photographs of some litters born in Eastern Europe with the white stripe and other white patterning. Insufficient knowledge/photographs of the ancestral lines are inhbibit our search to understand the origins. The photo example below shows another USA bred Afghan with the white stripe, but this time the parents were not Badshah and Zahera (allthough they are the maternal Grandparents).. See photo below

4.2 The AHCA/AKC Breed Standard re White Markings
The current AHCA/AKC breed standard says the following about such markings - "White markings especially on the head, are undesirable". Donald Smith (past president of AHCA) explained in 1961 why the AHCA included this statement in the breed standard - "Well in a few words, because they are. Seriously, I have covered this topic at some length in my June column in Pure Bred Dogs, written prior to receipt of your questionnaire. I know of no way to explain why such markings are undesirable except to ask you imagine, say, a black Afghan hound with long white stockings possibly ticked with blue, or a fawn with white patches running through its outer coat, or masked red with a white blaze from nose to topknot. These things can happen in Afghans. They were happening when the standard was clarified. They will happen again if, in breeding, we do not carry at least some prejudice against white markings. Genetically, such markings are progressive in nature and tend to take rather sudden and large cumulative jumps in extent. The net effect of extensive white markings is an off-type appearance in an Afghan hound. This is the fact: the logical explanation could be any of several after the fact. I would suggest that, for one thing, the Afghan coat and coat pattern is not calculated to enhance such markings, and vice versa. The particular emphasis on white markings about the head may have a two-fold cause. First, you usually get white markings on the head only in company with white markings elsewhere. Secondly, the noble expression and subtle lines of a good Afghan head are nullified by white markings just as surely as if daubed with streaks of white war paint.

4.3 Q. A. Shaw Mckean and the AHCA/AKC Breed Standard
Surprisingly perhaps, Shaw was not a member of the AHCA standards committee that formulated the current breed standard. However, while he had no apparent official involvement, he clearly had strong views on the topic. Miller and Gilbert Iin their book "The Complete Afghan Hound" - explained that the standards making process was fraught with bickering from the outset and that Shaw expressed his views in the Kennela Gazette colums. Shaw was adament that a fierce, dark eye be a requirement in the standard. We have no information about Shaws position about these white markings, which is unfortunate as they seem to have come down from his lines, so his view would have been very interesting.

5. TWO FIRES AT PRIDES HILL KENNEL 1941

Newspaper archives reveal that two fires occured at Shaw's Prides Hill property in Feb/Mch 1941, fortunately in both instances the Kennels and hounds were safe and evacuation was not necessary. In the second fire two members of Shaw's household were badly burnt and required hospital treatment.

6.1. Notes re above breeding table

6.1.1 The litter of 8 born in April 1937 were recorded as being bred by Q A Shaw Mckean (Prides Hill) but registered under the Doreborn kennel name. In actuality, the breeder was Mrs Anne D De Witt and apparently Q A Shaw Mckean became owner of the entire litter (Source - Lillian Goodman, "Our Afghans" researcher and writer). Checking AHI pedigrees which are based on the official AKC registrations (stud book), this shows Shaw Mckean as breeder of all 8 in the litter, 1 became owned by Mrs Helen McCauley, 2 owned by Mrs R F Boger, 5 owned by Mrs Anne de Witt. See the Doreborn section for further info. Interestingly, Shaw Mckean didnt apparently become owner of any of the littermates, despite him (according to Lillian Goodman) having purchased the entire litter. Doreborn's Dadir was owned by :Mrs Helen L McCauley (Klan) who bred a litter sired by Dadir which included the bitch Lasca Klana who became a brood bitch for Mrs Ida Kenny (no kennel name).

6.1.2 Mrs Kenny bred a litter by Rudiki Of Prides Hill out of Lasca Klana in 1940, One of the litter, a bitch, (Rudika of Blakeen) was originally owned by Charlotte Blake Hoyt (Blakeen). Mrs Hoyt sold Rudika to Marion Florsheim (Five Mile) in January 1942. Two other offspring from the Rudiki/Lasca litter also went to Marion Florsheim's kennel. Charles Costible (Kandika) bred a litter out of Rudika of Blakeen, sired by his Khanhasset Kanda which produced Kandorissa Of Aldachar who was bred to Ch Taejon of Crown Crest and the ensuing litter in May 1954 produced Stormhill Silver Dream for the Whithingtons, and the bitch "Hope" for Kay Finch (Crown Crest). Hope was the dam of several important Crown Crest hounds, including Crown Crest Mr Universe.
