What's the mystery? The appearance of multiple DOREBORN KENNELS in the record books at about the same time, all breeding Afghan hounds

Lillian Goodman wrote her original Doreborn article c 1978 which AHT extended in 2004 and 2011. However, the mystery about multiple use of the Doreborn kennel name remained unresolved. Lyall Payne and Steve Tillotson have recently (February 2016) re-visited the issue and have now unravelled this long standing mystery.

NEW INFORMATION (1)
Our first discovery is of an AKC registration for the kennel name DOREBORN in June 1922, see below

DOREBORN KENNEL NAME REGISTRATION 1922

NEW INFORMATION(2)
Four ladies names are associated with use of the Doreborn kennel name. (We'll discuss ladies 2,3,4 first and return later to lady #1) -
1. Mrs Muriel Boger (also a co-breeding involving Boger and Strann)
2. Mrs James O Sanborn
3. Mrs Anne D De Witt
4. Mrs Anne Sanborn De Witt

(Ladies 2 , 3, and 4, are in fact one and the same person, Anne Dore, see below)

English born Ann Dore became Mrs James O Sanborn (James Oren Sanborn 1891-1930) on 31 May 1921 and started breeding dogs at their home in Pond Rd, Greene, Maine, using the prefix Doreborn. The kennel name is derived from her maiden and married surnames (DORE and sanBORN = DOREBORN). James Sanborn died on 27 June 1930. Ann then married Arthur B DeWitt (Arthur Birchard DeWitt 1892-1957). Anne then registered dogs under the Doreborn kennel name with her new married name Anne D De Witt (her name also appears as Anne Sanborn De Witt). The registrations invaribly use the split name De Witt whereas the name occurs elsewhere as one word - DeWitt.

NEW INFORMATION(3)
Lillian Goodman originally mentioned that there were TWO breeders (De Witt and Boger) using the DOREBORN affix around the same time. AHT's research in 2016 reveals that there were actually THREE varations on the use of the word Dorborn, involving THREE different breeder name combinations - (1). Boger, (2). Wilt, (3). Boger and Strann -

1. DOREBORN (used by Mrs Anne D De Witt, also. used by Mr Mrs Boger also used by Melville M Strann and Muriel R Boger)
2. OF DORBORN (used by Mr Mrs Boger)
3. DORBORN'S (used by Mrs Anne D De Witt)

NEW INFORMATION(4)
We also find another name in the registrations for an "entity" using the name Doreborn. That entity being "Doreborn Kennel". We have yet to find a reference to the ownership of this Doreborn Kennel entity but it would seem most logical that this entity was in fact Mrs Anne D De Witt who registered the kennel name (when she was known as Mrs James Sanborn) with the AKC in 1922.

NEW INFORMATION(5)
Data input errors in the some electronic records further exacerbated the confusion. For example a litter of 8 born in April 1937 were recorded as being bred by Q A Shaw Mckean (Prides Hill) but registered under the Doreborn kennel name. In actuality, the breeder was Mrs Anne D De Witt and apparently Q A Shaw Mckean became owner of the entire litter. Another data input error in the electronic records showed Benjamin Decker (Jac-A-Leen) as breeder of a Doreborns litter of 8 in June 1938, when in fact the registered breeder was "Doreborn Kennels" and owner of several of this litter was Benjamin Decker.

Lilian Goodman writing....

Were Anne de Witt and Mrs Boger initially partners? The confusion starts in 1937, when Anne de Witt was listed as owner of all pups bred out of Shaw Mckean's famed import Westmill Omar ex Harti Of Prides Hill. The puppies were whelped on April 7, 1937, and one of them went to Muriel Boger and was registered in November of 1937, which is where the mystery begins. All pups were registered under the Doreborn prefix. Muriel got DOREBORNS DAFRIDI, a dark fawn bitch AKC# A185089 from this breeding, while Anne's were listed in the AKC records as follows;

DOREBORN'S DABUL, light fawn dog, #A185096
DOREBORNS DADIR, light fawn dog, #A185094 who became a champion in 1938
DOREBORN'S DAKKA, dark fawn dog, #aA185092 who also became a champion in 1938
DOREBORN'S DAFRIDI, fawn, bitch #A125089
DOREBORN'S DARAB, another dark fawn dog, #A185091 who made champion in 1939
DOREBORN'S DARITI, a dark fawn bitch #AA185090
DOREBORN'S DIRALI, a light fawn dog, #AA185095
DOREBORN'S DURAK, a dark fawn dog #AA185093

Meantime, Muriel Boger's first litter whelped on July 15, 1939 out of another imported hound owned by Quincy A Shaw Mckean, LAKSHMAN OF ENRIALLIC ex Ch Fuladi Of Prides Hill, produced four dogs that were listed by the AKC as follows

See what I mean about a bit of confusion about the Doreborn kennel name? I understand that unsubstantiated rumor had it that Anne and Muriel co-owned Doreborn Kennels at one time and were located in Connecticut, but this has never been confirmed.

However, the AKC registered all Afs with the kennel name "DOREBORN" (listed before the rest of the name) as being owned and bred by Mrs Anne de Witt of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, while Afs registered with "OF DOREBORN" folowing the name, were listed as owned by Mr and Mrs Robert and Muriel Boger of Wayland, Massachusetts.
