Molly Sharpe

Chaman Afghan Hounds UK Page 8
(By Steve Tillotson October 2013)

We get some insight on Molly's reasoning in using Mohammed Ali Of Acklam on page 164 of Margaret Niblocks book "The Afghan Hound - A Definitive Study". Margaret writes - "Until the mid 1950's Mrs Sharpe, very much to the fore with the Chamans were showing hounds bred from her original stock. By 1952 two more Chamans were made up, the full brother and sigter Taj Abu and Taj Avia (Taj Ameer x Flavia). After nearly fifteen years of line breeding, some of the Chaman features were weakening and in order to maintain their good movement and temperaments and to improve heads, it had become necessary to provide fresh genes. Ch Mohammed Ali Of Acklam was chosen as the outcross, thus introducing two Westmill lines through Ch Westmill Bayezid Ansari and Ch Westmill Ben Havid and which also produced black and tan colouring. A Canny cross, for a mating to the ageing Taj Alfreda of Chaman produced two beaufitul hounds, Taj Aleh and Taj Arab, born March 1951 and which became champions in 1954. Particularly noticeable was the immediate improvement in heads which were long, well chiselled and with true Eastern expression from well-shaped eyes."

(Readers might want to flip back to page 7 and review the list of Chaman litters produced by Mohammed Ali Of Acklam and note that two of the four breedings by Ali were to his daughter Taj Arab Of Chaman in 1955 and 1956).

An observation from the Chaman breeding lists on page 7 is that Molly used Mohammed Ali Of Acklam as stud dog 4 times in the first half of the 1950's, and in parallel her homrbred stud Ch Taj Amrit Of Chaman also sired 4 litters for her in the same period. Let's explore Taj Amrit a bit further

    1. Taj Amrit (Chaman Litters) -

  • Taj Amrit Of Chaman x Taj Anouk Of Chaman 5/5/1952
  • Taj Amrit Of Chaman x Taj Azuri Of Chaman 25/6/1954
  • Taj Amrit Of Chaman x Taj Abida Of Chaman 14/8/1954
  • Taj Amrit Of Chaman x Taj Abida Of Chaman 26/10/1955

    2. In this same period, Ch Taj Amrit of Chaman
also sired litters (for other breeders) -

  • For Barfour kennel UK (Mrs Barker) via her bitch Suki Bey Of Carloway 10/09/1952
  • For Rifka kennel UK (Claire Race) via her bitch Taj Amira Of Chaman 10/10/1952
  • For Elkhatmandu kennel UK (Mrs M Holland) via her bitch Ameesha Of Televee 24/2/1954
  • For Shawville kennel UK (Mr F Wilson) via his bitch Katrina Of Shawville 4/30/1955
A littermate of the Elkhatmandu litter born 24/2/1954 was Budmash Khan (Of Tarril) who was sire to the Tarril foundation bitch Tamarisk Of Tarril. Another important kennel that started out with Chaman foundations was Claire Race (Rifka UK) with her bitch Taj Amira Of Chaman. Many other kennels starting out in the era of the early 1950's also started out in the breed with a Chaman hound.

Another important descendent of Taj Amrit came down via the Rifka kennel. Readers will note above that Claire Race (Rifka) used Taj Amrit on her bitch Taj Amira Of Chaman. One of the offspring was Calinda Ben Rifka who was owned by Mrs Ann Dove (Mother of Jenny Dove of the famous Saringa UK Afghan Hounds) who used Claire Races Ch Rifka's Tarquin of Carloway on Calinda and the resulting litter included the dog Tygah of Carloway. A Mrs Stitson owned the bitch Scheherezade Of Televee and used Tygah of Carloway as the stud dog. This litter produced Sheba Of Scheherezade and Tasha Of Zabul - Wally and Kay Pede's (Scheherezade Afghan hounds UK/USA) two foundation bitches. The Scheherezade kennel was a significant kennel with exports to many other countries. Eventually the Pede's left England to return to their homeland USA and took their Schehrezade hounds with them. These whole chain of events started with the mating of Taj Amrit of Chaman and Taj Amira Of Chaman and is an excellent example of the importance and significance of Molly Sharpe's Chaman Afghan hounds.
