Now let's look at the inbreeding coefficient for sire, dam and for the offspring (Taiza). I have put Taiza's inbreeding chart left and centered with the sire chart right and at the top, the dam chart is right and at the bottom. Hope this makes sense when you view it -

Discussion

Taiza's sire - Uli Chan Of Liang Tsjeoe is pretty much an outcross and his coefficient of inbreeding (COI) is just 6.25%. His inbreeding level is low because his parents (Rajah and Champaka) are themselves outcrosses. Whilst Rajah is of all Bell Murray breeding, its not an inbred line. That having been said, there are some common ancestors in Rajah and Champaka's pedigrees and that is where the 6.25% comes from. Specifically from the Bell Murray ancestors Baluch, Ooty, Pushum

Taiza's dam - Champake De Flandre is a straight outcross. Ghazni on sire side, Bell Murray on dam side

Taiza's inbreeding coefficient is around 29%. That is true "inbreeding". So the question readers might ask how is it that two non inbred parents of different lineage when mated, produce an inbred offspring. The answer is that Uli Chan was bred to his mother Champaka de Flandre. That one breeding relationship accounts for a COI of 25%. The final bit of COI comes from three Bell Murray ancestors (Baluch, Ooty,Pushum) that are common to both Uli Chan's pedigree and Champaka's pedigree.

What about Mustavfi of Ghazni and Khan and Rani, theyre on both sides of the pedigree, why don't they contribute to the COI? The rules for calculating the COI per Sewell Wright (the person who designed the algorithm) uses the contribution from the most recent common ancestor. In this case Champaka. The algorithm excludes Champaka's parents as Champaka is the front or leading common ancestor down that particular pedigree line. If you think about that rule, every ancestor behind a common ancestor is also common, and that could involve hundreds of ancestors. Rather than listing their influences the algorithm uses the COI from the most recent of that common ancestor lineage. If Champaka existed in this pedigree with a different offspring then the parents contribution would have been calculated and included separately. There are many other rules to be followed in using Wrights COI formula. Simply running a computer implementation of Wright's COI doesn't provide an understanding of the result. It is necessary to have an understanding of the formulla, and the various rules of what you includ/exclude in the calculation, and the reasons for any such inclusions/exclustions. If an ancestors is themselves inbred, there is another rule that affects the calculation of that particular ancestor.

In plain English, Taiza is highly inbred to her paternal and maternal grandmother Champaka de Flandre. The expectation would probably be that Taiza's genotype and phenotype would be similar to Champaka. But with Genetics there is never a guarantee. Wrights COI algorithm is about "probability of inheritence", thats all it is "probability". Again in plain englsh, with a COI profile such as Taiza's one would imagine that Taiza inherited a lot of her mothers genetic makeup, and may have looked very similar. Remember that is the "probable" expectation, but that is not an absolute statement of expectation.

I didn't want to take the inbreeding/genetics discussion any deeper than the above, only because whilst I have an understanding at a basic level, I am simply not qualified to take the subject to the deeper level.

What is striking about this breeding is the change from the modest COI profiles of Taiza's parents, to the much higher level of COI in Taiza's profile (almost entirely due to the fact that Taiza was the product of a mother/son breeding). In Taiza's COI chart, notice on the right hand graph that Taiza's "rate of inbreeding per generation" has almost doubled at the 1st generation level, compared with the 8th generation. This quantifies the rate of inbreeding per generation, and by displaying that calculation in a bar chart it serves to provide a monitor (trend analysis) of the inbreeding level. Geneticists who worked with us in developing the KCBS system informed us that the ideal rate of inbreeding is around 3-4 percent per generation. In the early days of the breed when there were very few Afghans available, breeders routinely bred back into their own lines, even mother/son matings as their only available option. These days such closeness of breeding would probably be frowned upon.

The Liang Tsjeoe line expired and became extinct. Uli Chan of Liang Tsjeoe produced one litter for his breeder/owner in 1932. None of the offspring were incorporated in the pedigree history of the breed, so the Liang Tsjeoe line efectively ended in 1932.

Gaudentia of Liang Tsjeoe had one litter in Belgium for her owner Alphonse Godts (de Ruwendael) in 1933 sired by Barukhzy's Khan. None of the offspring were incorporated. Here's the pedigree of that breeding

Barukhzy's Khan is one of Mrs Eta Pauptit's foundation Afghan hounds. It's interesting and noteworthy that Alphonse Godts (de Ruwendael) used Khan on his Gaudentia of Liang Tsjeoe bitch several years prior to Mrs Pauptits use of him.

One wonders, if, but for the unfortunate calamity of Distemper at the Liang Tsjeoe kennels whether Dutch, and possibly world pedigree history could have been quite different to the way it transpired?
