The Kuhsan Kennels of Redwood City, California were owned by Mr R.W.Sampson - one of the early breeders who realized that mos of the Afghans in the country in his day were close relatives and consequently rather inbred. He therefore impored six Afghan Hounds as his foundation stock, while he campaigned only some of them to their titles and didn' show his puppies much, he did bring them to the shows a lot to promote public interest in our breed, his only non-import ws Am Ch Barberryhill Phillip who was eventually bred to the import - Jalalabad Kara

Here are his foundation Afs; BARBERRYHILL PHILLIP, a tan dog, whelped 5/14/34 by Bayard Warren (#A974957) (Ch Badshah Of Ainsdart ex Barberryhill Illusive). He became an American champion in 1938.

GARRYMHOR KISHTWAR, Aa golden dog (#A48632 whelped 7/3/1935 by Mrs T.S.Couper of England (Tash Garift of Pushtikuh ex Roshana el Kabul) who became an American Champion in 1937

JALALABAD KARA, an important cream bitch (#A95502), bred by Mrs M Wood (Westmill, England) (whelped 4/25/1932) ouf of Kymn ex Shahin of Ghazni. She was bred to Kishtwar for the Kuhsan kennels first litter on 1/22/1937.

GARRYMHOR KHASA, a golden bitch (#A48633) also imported from England, bred by Mrs A Lapham out of Amanullah ex Hazada, brn 6/24/35. She became a champion in 1937.

JALALABAD KHARGOSH OF KUHSAN, a black dog born 6/4/1936 from Mrs F.G. Ide of England (out of Garrymhor Ghulam Nubi ex Westmill Marana), He was ued as stud (owned by Mrs J.R. Renfrew, Blue Bonnet kennels, with the litter whelped on 7/1/1937

MOUHNA OF KUHSAN (#A207250) a red bith with black muzzle born 5/24/1935, bred by Mrs L Prude of England (Ch Agha Lala Of Geufron ex Ranee of Cheltside). Mouhna arived in whelp to Eng Ch Garrymhor Yhengiz Khan (with Mr Sampson listed as breeder). Her litter ws born in the USA on 12/8/1937, and she became a US Champion in 1938. After Mouhna earned her title she was sold to Mrs Porter Of Kingway Kennels.

SURYAKANTA OF GEUFRON OF KUHSAN, a fawn dog with black points (#A313469) whelped by Mrs E.E. Drinkwater in England ouf of Agha Lala Of Geufron ex Sheba Of Wyke. He was bred to Farida of Kuhsan, with the litter born on 9/1/1939.

And that brings us to the six litters registered by Kuhsan Kennels, all of them whelped between 1937 and 1939

On January 22, 1937 (Ch Garrymhor Kishtwar/Kalalabad Kara), five dogs and two bitches entred the US Afghan scene.

On April 6, 1937. a litter out of Ch Garrymhor Kishtwar ex Ch Garrymhor Khasa produced six puppies.

Next we have a somewhat confusing registration; a litter whelped 12/8/1937 out of Ch Garrymhor Yhengiz Khan ex Am Ch Mouhna Of Kuhsan, bred in England, but whelped in the USA. It produced

Ed Note: In the breed column notes of "Dog News" July 1938, we find this related snippet - "Mrs Margaret Nison of Santa Fe, New Mexico has recently purchased a very lovely puppy out of an imported bitch from R W Sampson. This puppy has exceptionally choice bloodlines and was bought for future stud. Ed note; that is of course a reference to Raj Of Kuhsan as below

And here's the confusion, (mentioned just above the litter list above) - also registered in February 1939 Haifa Of Kuhsan, a golden dog (#A267614) sold to Robert van Deusen. Haifa's name and AKC number appear twice - same owner - but with two different whelping dates and two different sets of sires and dams (Ch Barberryhill Phillip ex Jalalabad Kara) vs the Mouhna litterr - one whelped 12/8/1937, the other on 9/9/1937. Go figure!
