Ch Sahadi Shikari  | This month's cover dog. Soroya Kennel' Ch Sahadi Shikari, exemplifies near perfection in an Afghan Hound. He excells in symmetry, purity of line, and balance of all parts: he is the epitome of canine elegence. His properly laid back shouldrs, wide hips, and strong hindquarters with good bend of stifle and angulation give him the light, springy gat with great reach front and rear for which he is so well known. He is fluid grace in motion. His long, refined head and dark, piercing eyes set him apart. He has been recognized as a great dog from coast to coast with breed and group wins over the largest entries under the best judges. It is this elegant type of hound which we are striving to continue t breed here at Soroya. Our foundation stock consists of the finest eastern and wetern bloodlines. Our pedigrees carry the great names of Ophaal, Shirkhan, Karli, and Taejon, to name a few. We first become interested in the breed in 1957, when we saw a picture of Taejon. In 1958 we bought our first Afghan, a puppy bitch, before mid -1959, she was a champion, Ch Khieba of Tajmir. It was at this time that we acquired our famous Shikari and our Mr Universe son, Mr Vanguard, both six months old. Ch Crown Crest Mr Vanguard has proven himself worthy both in the show ring and as a sire, A group winner, he has placed in the group every time that he has been awarded BB. In two litters he has sired three champions: Ch Soroya Khieba, Ch Soroya Khiezar and Ch Soroya Khivan. All three were breed winners from the classes! Shkari's first litters were whelped in April of this year, seven by Ch Soroya Khieba and one, Soroya Solitaire, by Ch Crown Crest Hi-Dhal. We have great opes for these youngsters. We owe our success mainly to those devoted breeders who unselfishly gave us the best they had for our foundation, and to those judges who have recognized the qualify of those fine hounds which we have bought and bred |
Ch Tully's Big John  | The black-masked apricot Afghan on this months's cover is the multiple Best In Show winner, Ch Tuly's Big John. Shown in the Group 21 times, John has won it 11 times and has manhy other Group placings. Heis a crowd-pleaser, moving with dignity and elegance that "takes your breath away". Just past four years old, he will be shownextensively throughout the midwest by co-owner Betsy Tully. John is a popular stud in the Nabraska area, producing a "rainbow" of exotic colors in his get Equally famed is the Tully's blue Afghan Ch Continental Blue Falcoln, a Group and Best in Speciality winner, bred and handled by his previous owner, noted Afghan breder Vera Bailey. Only her great desire to see him campaigned extensively by a top professional handler persuaded Vera to part with Falcoln. Jack Funk, prominent Chicago based handler, will handle Falcon exclusively against the top copetition in the country. Mr Funk, who handled Ch Sahadi Shikari to the top record of all time in Afghans, also piloted Tully's Big John to his championship in jut five week-ends, capped with a Group win on the day he finished. It will be interesting to see these two Tully dogs in competition when their paths infrequently cross. These two grat champions and Ch Taralene's Yankee Pasha, a very typey black Afghan with gorgeous head, comprise the stud force on which the Tully's bae their breeding program - they believe that in addition to the soundness and good movement needed in an Afghan, elegance (which requires coat, conditioning, refinement and beauty) too often is overlooked. It is called for in the Standard and sets the Afghan apart as the king of dgs. In these three fine studs with their interlocking pedigrees, the Tully's hope they have found the key.
