Afghan Hound Times photo = Reigh abram (Dureigh) c 1980

In between the second and third litters, the Abram's bred a a litter sired by Kandar of Riverside out of Bey Bombay of Five Mile which produced the bitch Dureighs Dey Abrama. ((Kandar of Riverside was bred by Margaret L Nison) ). Reigh Abram said about Kandar Of Riverside - "of course, was a champion and had won Groups, but he was shown very sparingly. Turkuman Tar was shown very sparingly but he had a Best In Show. Kandar Of Riverside was also a Best In Show dog. Neither, however, were shown extensively, so they didn't compile records or anything. Still they were excellent specimens of the breed as far as we were concerned.

Reigh stated "We bred to Kandar of Riverside because he was the best dog we knew at the time - and that was in the beginning of our breeding program. Marion shipped Maggie into us on Saturday morning and said she had to be bred right away. She'd tried to breed her to her Belgian import but she couldn't get her bred. She told us we'd have to breed her right away. We had the other Rudiki daughter entered the next day at Warren so we left early Sunday morning and showed 5 Mile's Tachi (and got Best Of Winners). Dewey jumped in the car and went to Pittsburgh, whilst I stayed at the show with Tachi, and bred Maggie to Kandar Of Riverside. He was a magnificant animal but he wasn't shown a whole lot. Originally he belonged to Johanna Owens. Later, he belonged to Ethel Robinson. She bought him as a champion. We didn't know too much about Afghans at the time, but he was a beautiful showman with a gorgeous coat, and he was sound as a dollar. As far as we knew, Ethel had Afghans for many years and had owned several champions before she bought Kandar of Riverside, so we took her advice and bred to him. She was right and we got four beautiful bitches. The old breeders said it corrected the faults Rudiki was supposed to have had. They said Rudiki had a weak front and was too bitchy. In the bitches, we seemed to correct that."

This was a subtle shift in breeding emphasis at Dureigh. It retained the Prides Hill lines via Bey Bombay of Five Mile, whilst introducing new lines via Kandar of Riverside. These new lines included Sardar Khan El Kabul (UK import) and, inclusion of Tufan Of Ainsdart (littermate to Badshah) lines via the US bred bitch Flo Flo of Ghazni. (Flo Flo of Ghazni was also bred by Margaret L Nison )

Another shift occured in November 1949 in a mating of Yenghiz Khan Of Five Mile to Bey Bombay of Five mile and which produced the bitch Dureighs Fai of Hillbanks. Yenghiz Khan introduced the UK Chaman lines into the Dureigh breeding program.

In March 1953, a mating of the bitch Dureigh's Dey Abrama to Turkuman Tar of Grandeur produced the Champion dog Dureigh's Dark Victory. This was another shift and this introduced a line to the UK import Turkuman Nissim's Laurel.

These two evolving lines (Dureigh's Dark Victory and Dureigh's Fai of Hilbanks) consistent with the Dureigh breeding strategy ("We tried to bring down two lines at the same time, one outcrossed one way and one outcrossed the other"), were combined and produced a litter which included Ch Eljac's Dragon Lady of Dureigh. Reigh said about Dragon Lady "She was a beautiful bitch but there was more to her than I liked. I liked the typier bitch. She had a gorgeous head, eye and expression, as well as a gorgeous neck and shoulders, but she was just a little bit more Afghan than I like. I like extreme type, with a very refined head, less bone, a very silky coat (ant not a great deal of it) and good movement". There were twelve in Dragon Lady's litter and she was the only one the Abram's kept to show, the rest of the litter went to non show homes. Reigh explained that her and Dewey tended to like differnt types of Afghan Hounds. She explained that Dewey's favourites were Dragon lady and Ch Hillbanks High and Mighty, who won the Midwest Speciality from the classes when he was 13 months old and was killed a month later. Reigh stated that was Dewey's favourite, and that he liked more of a bigger heavier dog than Reigh did.
