KENNEL/BREEDER HISTORY
DUREIGH (USA)
Page 1

This section on Dureigh Afghan Hounds originally came about in 1998 at the suggestion of David Baker, Ohio, USA (dbaker@columbus.rr.com) and who has provided some of the photographs shown below. We have recently (Jan 2012) added additional pedigrees, photos and information from our archives.

DUREIGH - The Early Days

Researching the AKC Stud Book, reveals that Dureigh Kennels were established around 1942 by Reigh and Dewey Abram in Ohio, USA.

The first Afghan Hound I have traced registered to the Abram's was Cainbrook Churprassi, (pet name "Lana"), a cream bitch.

Churprassi was bred to Am Ch Rama Bhajan of Arthea and produced a litter of five which whelped 1946/5/23, three from this litter became champions. The registered breeder for this litter is recorded as Dr & Mrs James P McCain of Cainbrook.

From this litter the Abram's kept Cainbrook Asiya (b), and Cainbrook Karatian (d). The first breeding I have traced which carried the "Dureigh" affix occured in March 1948. This included a red dog - Dureigh's Ja Ja Ba of Hillbanks, sired by the Abram's Cainbrook Karatian out of the bitch Hazara of Harline. The Hazara kennel was owned by Howard Warner, also of Ohio, and his lines also carried Arthea breeding.

This early breeding is based largely on the three US imports from the UK to the Prides Hill Kennels - Badshah of Ainsdart, Westmill Omar and Asra Of Ghazni. The pedgigree also contains the US import from the UK Ganputti Achmed Ben Hassan

The next breeding I found occured also in 1948, on 11th November, again the sire was Cainbrooks Karatian but out of the Arken lineage inbred bitch - Yak Haks Gem. Interestingly, the breeder is listed as Reigh "Berry" Abram. This litter included the dog - Dureighs Dali, a red with black mask.

The Abram's obtained their first Rudiki daughter in 1945 - Tachi Of Five Mile and showed her for a while. Reigh Abram explained that they couldn't get Tachi bred so Marion ( Marion Foster Florsheim - Five Mile) sent the Abram's a bitch - Bey Bombay who they bred to Kandar Of Riverside and got four beautiful bitches in the litter which whelped 1948/11/17. The litter included;

CH Dureigh's Dey Abrama Red Black mask, bitch
Dureigh's Dey Alreighbra Fawn Black mask, bitch
CH Dureigh's Dey Bombay Fawn Black mask, bitch
(We haven't tracked down the 4th littermate yet).

The Abram's finished the two champions in this litter). Reigh stated many years that this litter "was the foundation of everything we have today". Reigh credits Marion Foster Florsheim as giving her type, elegance, temperament and was the greatest influence in the Dureigh breeding program.

The Abram's did eventually succeed in getting Tachi Of Five Mile bred to their dog Cainbrooks Karatian. We have traced two from this litter which whelped 1950/04/27 a dog Dureigh's Social Climber and a bitch Dureigh's Kara both registered as colour apricot. However, these particular breedings do not appear to prevail in subsequent Dureigh bloodlines, but further research is needed to confirm this.

Reigh stated "We believe strictly in linebreeding, but we also feel you have to outcross every four or five generations. If you stick too closely to your line, you're not breeding out faults. You've got to bring in new blood. We don't believe in inbreeding (We've inbred perhaps twice). We believe in strict linebreeding".

Reigh continues "We've outcrossed to Grandeur and BenGhazi. We outcrossed on our very first litter out of Bey Bombay. We took her to Riverside breeding. We tried to bring down two lines at the same time, one outcrossed one way and one outcrossed the other. When we breed one from each line, we were still maintaining the Rudiki breeding, doubled up, but we were still outcrossing. We didn't get into inbreeding".
