1971 BOB was Ch Khayam's Apollo and the same breeding achieved BOB in 1976 with Khayam's Ares. Both were sired by BOB winner Ch Ammon Hall Nomad (yet another Holly Hill blend) and the UK founded Scheherezade lines of Wally Pede. The 1973 BOB winner was Ch Raja's El Cid, a full Dureigh bloodline pedigree. Dureigh always struck me as being very "English" in pedigree terms, and this pedigree gets back to Five Miles breeding very quickly and seemed to avoid the imports/blended lines as mentioned earlier. 1974 BOB Ch Lippizan's Big Red Machine represents predominantly Crown Crest breeding blended with Coastwind Gazebo lines. 1977 BOB Ch Shangrila Pharahna Kunasata represent a continuation of the Shangrila lines mentioned earlier, and in 1977 it was Ch Coastwind Abraxas, the fmous stud dog who appears in so many pedigrees. The breeding is mainly Akaba/Grandeur and some Crown Crest. In 1978 BOB went to Ch Suvenda Renegade Of Esfahan, sired by Mecca's Falstaff (a very big influence in the history of the breed in the US). In 1979 BOB Ch Kaftan Korrigan, sired by Ch Kaftan Khan Of Grandeur, a :classic: original Grandeur pedigree. Then in 1979 BOB went to Ch Jamica's Rani Fafnir, a largely Moornistan lineage influenced pedigree.

Into the 80's, did it change again? 1980 Ch Camri's Bentley sired by Falstaff - say no more. 1981 Ch Zuvenda Razcym a breeding of the 74 and 78 BOB winners. In 1982 Ch Province Applause Resolution depth of breeding based on Moornistan. 1983 Ch Kabik's the Challenger and 1984 Ch Cani's Summer Breeze, both of strong Coastwind'Akaba breeding. 1985 Ch Yucatan Knight Vision again shows an interesting pedigree with a depth of breeding on Akaba and Mecca lines. 1986 Ch Pahlavi Smokin N' The Boys Room, an interesting pedigree not easy to summarize in a few words. Akaba, Grandeur and Mecca breeding. 1972 Ch Cavu's Flying Circus represents a different blending than the previous, but largely encompasses the same trio of major bloodlines. 1988 Ch Kabik's The Front Runner, sired by the 1983 BOB, doubled back toFalstaff via Kabik's Mindy. The aforementioned Kabik hounds were indeed very famous and very influential in the future of the breed both in the USA and overseas. Exit the 80's and enter the 90's. Fittingly 1989, 1991, 1992 (three National BOB's, but not quite a hat-trick) we find Ch Pahlavi Puttin On The Ritz ("Taco") in the spotlight and is one Afghan Hound that I think needs no introduction.

1990 Ch Magistelle Flaming Sword, sired by the well known stud dog Tarina Arctic Eagle. 1993 Ch Mahali Licorice N Lace with a very strong back pedigree breeding to Falstaff. 1994 Ch Buena Vista Khabardar whose modern influences include Jorogz and Falstaff lines but also some earlier Mecca lines in the back pedigree. Ch Tryst Of Grandeur, inbred line back to Ch Blue Shah and Ch Shirkhan Of Grandeur. Possibly the Afghan Hound that won more BIS's and points than any other Afghan Hound in the history of the breed. 1996 Ch Regency, interesting pedigree on the sire's side (Coastwind Tanman) which contains the Australian Fermoy lines which go back to Ch Coastwind Holy Man, exported to Australia. In 1997 Ch Mithra Gabriel Of Etrigan with an interesting pedigree line via Mithra Nataraja of Etrigan going back to Dureigh and also lineage in the back pedigree to Ben Ghazi and early Mecca breedings.

Stanley Dangerfield, famous UK Judge, broadcaster and author, had the honor of judging the AHCA National in 1966 at the Henry Hudson Hotel in New York where the entry was restricted to 100 due to space limitations. Further details are not to hand. Mr Dangerfield wrote about US Afghans when Kay Finch visited the UK to judge the Manchester All-Breed Championship Show two years later in 1968 where she attracted a record entry. Incidentally, Kay Finch gave the Dog Challenge Certificate to English Ch Wazir Of Desertaire who was imported from the US. Mr Dangerfield wrote "It is fitting that this spectacular turn-out is for an American judge, Kay Finch of California. Fitting because I believe that the United States has made great contributions to the breed in respect to both appearance and temperament". Mr Dangerfield was clearly impressed with the US Afghans he saw in 1966 as was I in 1996 some thirty years later. A happy and successful National 98 to you all.
