CH WESTMILL NATANZ - an English Champion bitch - was imported by this kennel and attained her Ameican title in 1949. She was then bred with Westmill Razuran, another import. The result of this union was whelped 4/4/41.
At this point, Oakvardon bred between their own and had an established line. In 1945, Oakvardon Charon went on to become the first champion under this kennel name. Although Venita Oakie finished Morgiana, Umberto and Natanz to their titles, they did not bear the Oakvardon name. Natanz and Umberto had also won multiple Best-In-Shows honors.

*******UPDATE DEC 2015, MAJOR INFORMATION DISCOVERY ABOUT UMBERTO*********
Background - Umberto's parents are recorded in the AHI pedigree database as being Amanullah and Sheila Beg, which is consistent with the AKC stud book registration details. Confusion has occured because Amanullah resided in the UK and never left UK shores, and Sheila Beg resided in the UK and never left UK shores
AHI pedigree database has the breeder of Anthony and Sheila as Mrs Stubbs (UK) and the owner as Mr H G Bennett (UK). We know that Mr Bennet was a sergeant in the British Army based in India and that he returned to England around the time that Anthony and Sheila are first mentioned. That suggests that Mr Bennett owned these hounds in India and bought them back to England. That also suggests that Mrs Stubbs who is listed as breeder also bred Anthony and Sheila in India. We note that Mrs Stubbs is also recorded as the breeder of Dakkas Delight, another Afghan that we know was bred in India and exported to the UK. So there is a pattern emerging here, hounds bred in India, owned by Stubbs or H G Bennetf in England. and in the case of Dakkas Delight and Shelia Beg - not registered with the UK Kennel Club.
Copy below of scans of newspaper archives (new information December 2015)
Studying the above news archives we are able to clarify the situation re Umberto, and we also discover that he travelled with another Afghan hound (a bitch named Flying Ranee) , sadly Ranee only made it as far as Honolulu before expiring. Mention of Flying Ranee is new information to us.
We also just found just another show entry detail where again Umberto is referenced as being an import from India and bred by "Rajah Palno". Hitherto we had assumed Palno was a "Mr" rather than an Indian Noble "Rajah", that is new and helpful information-

Lyall also mentioned that "one of the parents has a US link", that parent is Sheila Beg who was the dam of Nerone Of Pommelrock (bitch) born 5 May 1934 in England and exported to the USA (AKC stud book Sept 1938), There is No record of this English bred bitch in the UK KC's Breed Record Supplement. That is a coincidence, Sheila Beg is dam of Umberto - no record in KC BRS, Sheila Beg is dam of Nerone - no record in KC BRS. The two hounds born in different years, so not from the same litter or breeding in fact. Heck of a coincidence that two offspring from Sheila end up in the AKC Stud Book but not in the KC BRS. The press cutting announcing Umberto's arrival in the USA is dated 12 October 1937 and the narrative states that Mrs Jack Oakie will enter her new arrival (show not stated, but it turned out to be Santa Anna CA show on October 16-17 1937). Noting that Umberto wasn't registered with AKC until January 1939, Mrs Jack Oakie, I suggest, clearly had plans to exhibit Umberto before he was registered with AKC. I don't know AKC show regulations as of 1937-39 and whether it was permissible to exbhibit an unregistered dog. I would have thought not?-

We also found a press archive that said Umberto was born in Poona, India, so we now have several newspaper archives confirming India as the country of origin.- We also just found another show entry detail where again Umberto is referenced as being an import from India and bred by "Rajah Palno". Hitherto we had assumed Palno was a "Mr" rather than an Indian Noble "Rajah", that is new and helpful information-
