In 1941 Mary Matchett registered the first Canadian bred litter of Afghan Hounds. From this litter whelped 9/17/40, sired by Ramy out of Ch Khyber El Myia, came the cream dog, Ch Burma Kush El Myia. He was owned by the Mountview Kennels in British Columbia. A fawn bitch, Lascar El Myia, went to Frank Weithoff as a puppy but was later acquired by Marie Leeming of Quebec, where in 1942 she whelped a litter sired by Meneleck, the earlier import from the States. Also in this litter was the bitch Victorious El Myia who was bred to the American import, Kerrin Fachamet.
In 1942 two American dogs, destined to become greats in inerntional Afghan-History, stole the limelight in Canada's show rings, together with their popular owner Mrs Marion Foster Florsheim of the Five Mile Kennel USA. Am Ch Rudiki of Prides Hill on his fourth owner, claimed his Canadian title with four best in show wins, while his cream kennel mate, an import from Great Britain and on his fifth owner, Am Ch Rana Of Chaman of Royal Irish did so with two best in show awards. Marion and Canadian professional handler Mr Alf Loveridge propelled the dogs to stardom in Canada, Rudiki was #1Afghan in 1942, #2 in 1943, #1 in 1944 and Rana was #2 in 1942. Neither of these dogs sired a litter in Canada. Also in this year Mr Alf Loveridge imported the tan coloured dog Barberryhill Kali (whelped 12/03/1936 Westmill Omar x Barberryhill Nannie) from the US Barberryhill kennels. Mr Loveridge transferred Kali to his 5th owner - Mrs Eva Gudgeon (Birchwood Afghan hounds). Kali gained his Canadian title in 1942. Also imported in 1942 were the two bitches Ayeshah Of Grandeur (Duke Afridi Of Cyann x Far Away Loo), and Ebbaba Of Grandeur (Westmill Humayun of Catawba x Far Away Kuh-I-Baba by Viola Fielden Ku kennel. Viola Fielden sold both bitches on and they produced for their new owners. Ayesha went to Eugene G Lynch and Ebbaba went to John J Clemens. (Source Inge James "Canadian History and Statistics").
Ayesha Of Grandeur
Inge explains that the two Grandeur bitches were in exchange for two littermate puppies Sunny had acquired (Chali Of Ku and Taadja of Ku) previously. Our research find that Sunny Shay used her great champion Taj Akbaruu Of Grandeur on Chali Of Ku in two breedings in 1942 and 1946. We dont find any breeding by Grandeur for Taadja of Ku. There is another important connection between Canada and Grandeur. In 1942, (per Inge James) El Myia and Ku exchanged a number of puppies to be incorporated into their breeding programs The golden buff male Nehru Of Ku (Can Ch Burma Kush El Myia x Vidja El Myia) was the eventual sire of Am Ch Taj Akbaruu of Grandeur who was grandsire of Am Ch Shirkhan Of Grandeur
Inge James book tells us of yet another interesting twist to all of the above - Ayeshah of Grandeur was the first brindle registered in Canada. Her several matings included a mating to Taimani Of Barukhzy (a later UK import). Ayesha produced litters sired by Can Ch Turkh Tuffenuff El Myia, Kala's Sabu of Ku and Dakon's Sahib. Ayeshah did not obtain a Canadian championship and eventually returned to the USA to the ownership of Mrs E Rowe (Mojun) who bred a litter from Ayeshah in 1956 which was sired by Kazan's Makari (Hillborn Kazan x Fatima Of Arthea).
Mrs Eva Gudgeon (Birchwood) acquired Am Ch Barberryhill Kali (Westmill Omar x Barberryhill Nannie a litter sister to B Dolly, Charlie and Phillip), a tan dog born 12/3/36, he completed his Canadian title but was not bred from. Later Mrs Gudgeon acquired the black masked red dog, Asri Havid Of Five Mile (Can Am Ch Rana Of Chaman Of Royal Irish x Am Ch Rudika Of Blakeen a look-alike daughter daughter of Ch Rudiki out of Lasca Klana, who was a granddaughte of Tazi Of Beg Tute/Saki Of Paghman, born 9/2/42.
Mrs Eva Gudgeon (Birchwood) with Asri Havid II
litter brother to Ch Yenghiz Khan
Kerrin Faclouda, a black and tan btich whelped 8/3/44, sired by Am Ch Kerrin Facahmo x Kerrin Fachamsaal was imported by Mary Matchett. Faclouda whelped a total of four litters at El Myia, all sired by her Canadian champion
Inez Steward of the Tynedale Kennels in Vancouver imported her first Afghan hound from Dr Frank Porter Miller. This was Little Sahib (Am Ch Sahib Of Prides Hill x Bue Mist Of Egypt, a black masked red bitch, whelped 19/27/41, a daughter from another Tazi/Saki combination. Little Sahib was bred twice to her litterbrother Am Ch Sinbad the Sailor and produced two Canadian champions, Abu Benadam and Zardin of Tynedale
Other new breeders starting out around the early 1940's included -
Patrick J Brennan and his mother of the Mountview kennels in New Westminster, B.C. and wer the first to breed Afghan hounds on the west coast, and the second to own them. They purchased four males and a bitch from Mary Matchett - Burma Kush El Myia, Kia El Myia, Khym El Myia Sur Punjab El Myia and also Kala's Quetta Of Ku. Of these hounds only Burma Kush completed his title, which he dis in 1944.
Marie Leeming, of Fairness kennel, living in the province of Quebec acquired the female Lascar El Myia (Ramy x Ch Khyber El Myia), Lascar was bred by Mary Matchett, her second owner had been F Wiethof and produced a litter by the black Menelek (second Afghan recorded in the stud books).
John Clemens Abbadaba kennels Sudbury, Ontario in 1941 acquired the male Kala's Nicobar of KU (Ramy x Kala Of Chaman) and in 1942 he acquired the imported Ebabba of Grandeur and in 1942 registered a litter by these hounds. This breeding was later repeated four other times. Nicobar sired a total of six litters and produced one champion when Mrs Viola Felden used him on The Jeep Of Ku.
The first registration for an Afghan of black and tan colour occured, this was Kobo El Myia (Can Am Ch Kurram El Myia x Pic Of Chaman), whelped 4/23/42
Mrs C Miller (no kennel name), Haney B.C. bred her female Mountview Risda (Ch Burma Kush El Myia x Kala's Quetta Of Ku) to Sur Punjab El Myia with resulting stock that became the foundation for other breeders. This was the only litter registered by Mrs C Miller and the only time the parent dogs were used
Mrs Eugenia Lynch (Skyridge), Ottowa, Ontario registered her first litter of Afghans by Hindu Kush who parents were Am Ch Rudiki Of Prides Hill x Pommel Rock Kashan x Kala's Simla Of Ku (Ramy x Kala Of Chaman). During the later years of her Afghan activities Gene Lynch moved into a new kennel in Aylmer East (Hull), Quebec, and entered into a working partnership with Viola Fielden of the Ku Kennel. Most of the Ku dogs were housed at her kennel. Gene Lynch registered a total of 10 litters, the last in 1950. (source of this section - Inge James "Canadian History and Statistics")

The above mentioned Hindu Kush litter was a huge litter and of great signifigance for the breed in North America. The litter of 12 whelped 22/2/1941 included Ali Khyber, Khanhasset's Kanda. The litter was bred by Leah and Macky McConaha (USA - Khanhasset). Ali Khyber and K Kanda were major stud forces and made a huge contribution to the breed. Sunny Shay (USA Grandeur) used Hindu Kush in her breeding program and mated him to her Doreborns Karya in 1944
