New York Store Display Afghan Hounds
We have found a pair of store Afghan Hound for auction on Ebay. The current owner (Norma Sears) has kindly provided the following information and given her permission for us to use her photographs
These dogs came from an old money estate
of an elderly woman who had connections to the major store in whose windows
they were displayed. I was told it would have been the equivalent of Macy's
of the time.
I was told also that the Afghan hounds became popular in
fashion in 1926 in America. I'm very familiar with old dolls and old teddy
bears and I wouldn't hesitate to say they're at least 1926 or older.
I cannot find a maker's mark anywhere on the dogs.I would think someone who
manufactures something of this superior quality would sign it. It's
possible I'm missing it, though. I purchased them from an Ohio picker who
found them in an upstate New York estate sale.
They are so life-like with excellent detail and condition, this adorable pair of Afghan hounds is just stunning. Rarely ever seen, they were in a New York City store window around 1926 then kept in a controlled temperature storage since. The condition of the dogs is so amazing they could pass for real dogs at first.
The bodies are made of heavy paper mache and covered with long thick mohair,they have glass eyes and exceptional facial modeling. From a non-smoking environment,there is no damage, repairs or odor. Each dog is 47" long, the lying dog is 20" tall and the standing dog is 37" tall. I'm leaving the combing of the mohair to the new owner if deemed necessary..
Ed note: I find it very interesting that these two store Afghan Hounds possibly date from 1926, that is a very early date for "models" of the Afghan Hound to appear in the USA. We are grateful to Norma for sharing her information with us.
