8. THE WYKE AFGHAN HOUNDS
Mrs Nicholson's first Afghan hound was Sahira Of Kaf (Baluch x Sonee, whelped 16 Feb 1925), who she obtained from Miss Denyer in 1926. Mrs Nicholson used Miss Mansons dog Ch Buckmul in a breeding with Sahira Of Kaf. (The stud dog Buckmal was the first Afghan hound to become a UK Champion in the breed in 1927). The resultant litter whelped on 3rd October 1926 and included the bitch Ranee Of Wyke, the first Afghan hound to carry the Wyke affix.. Ranee also became the first Afghan hound owned by Captain Fox.
Mrs Nicholson owned another pure bred Bell Murray bitch - Zabana Of Kaf, (Taj Mahip Of Kaf x Sonee whelped 1st Feb 1926, bred by Miss Denyer) Zabana produced a litter for Mrs Nicholson also sired by Buckmal on 6th May 1928 which included Kim of Wyke and Sheba of Wyke. Kim was at one time owned by Captain Fox and was later transferred to Mrs Couper (Garrymhor). Littermate Sheba was transferred to Mrs Drinkwater (Geufron) where she became a valuable brood bitch and produced two champions - Ch Wanawallari Of Geufron and Ch Malati Of Geufron. Mrs Drinkwater later acquired Zabana of Kaf and she proved even more successful than her daughter Sheba by producing a total of 5 UK Champions for the Geufrons (Ch Yakub Khan of Geufron, Ch Shah Shuja Of Geufron, Ch Mahaprajapati Of Geufron, Ch Agha Lala Of Geufron and Ch Firdausi Of Geufron), Sheba also produced American Champion Suryakanta Of Geufron who was exported to Mr Samson's 'Kuhsan' kennel in California USA
Sheba Of Wyke |
The next Wyke litter was once again a breeding from Zabana of Kat, but this time the stud dog chosen was the homebred Kim of Wyke the litter whelped 4th August 1929, we only have two littermates on file, neither of which were bred from. The next Wyke litter is particularly interesting because the Dam was Ranee of Wyke (the first Afghan hound to carry the Wyke affix, bred by Mrs Nicholson, owned by Captain Fox) and the sire was Kim Of Wyke. The most well known offspring from the litter that whelped 21st February 1930 was a bitch - Shalimar Of Wyke who was sold to the Kuranda kennels owned by Mr. Mrs. Rothwell Fielding. Kuranda bred their homebred dog Kulli Khan of Kuranda to Shalimar of Wyke in 1932, see pedigree below
The pedigree above is a bit special from a breed history viewpoint. Kulli Khan Of Kuranda, we believe was the last pure bred Bell Murray lineage Afghan hound stud dog. Shalimar of Wyke we believe to be the last pure bred Bell Murray lineage Afghan hound brood bitch. Thus, this breeding represents the end of the pure Bell Murray lineage. Considering that both Mrs Nicholson and Captain Fox were involved from the outset with the Bell Murray lines and, noting that Wyke only ever bred pure Bell Murray type, it seems most fitting and appropriate that a Wyke bred Afghan hound should have been part of the final breeding of the Bell Murray type.

Captain Fox also bred livestock, sheep, pigs etc, here's a mention in the local press of an award for pigs that he bred
9. EVELYN DENYER ON THE BBC 1925
Miss Denyer gave a talk about the Afghan hound on BBC radio in 1925, see the news clipping below -
10. EVELYN DENYER AT SUTTON COURTENAY
Evelyn Denyer and her husband John Barton had a residence in Putney, S W London, but for reasons unknown, Evelyn Denyer gave the Sutton Courtenay address on her Crufts entries.
Perhaps Evelyn Denyer and Captain Fox had an agreement that her Kaf hounds would reside at Sutton Courtenay and that maybe Captain Fox staff helped take care of them?. Captain
Fox had a large acerage at Sutton Courtenay and could easily accomodate a large pack of Afghan hounds.
The photo below is quite famous, it appears in Hutchinson's Dog Encyclopaedia, an invaluable work of international importance on every breed of dog. The encylopedia was published
in 50 weekly parts in England in the early 1930's, edited by Walter Hutchinson. The photo below appears in the Afghan hound section. Because of Croxton Smith's article and photographs
published in Country Life in 1926 we know that Evelyn Denyers hounds were based at Sutton Courtenay as early as 1926. This is consistent with the date/s given in the Crufts catalogues.

(Outside the Norman Hall, on the other side of the road from Courtenay Lodge)
Margaret Niblock (page 112) in her book "The Definitive Afghan Hound" states that upon her marriage to Mr Barton, that Evelyn Denyer gave all her Afghan hounds to Captain Fox in 1926. The reference to 1926
may cause some accidental confusion - it could be that Evelyn Denyer gave all her Afghan hounds to Captain Fox in 1926, but it appears that most of the Kaf hounds were
not formerly transferred to Captain Fox until 1930. This perhaps suggests that after her marriage Evelyn Denyer aspired to maintain a breeding interest in Afghan hounds and
left them in the charge of Captain Fox but not intially formerly transfering ownerhip of them.
Just to add some confusion to the (use of affix) situation we mentioned on the previous page -, Captain Fox is listed as the breeder of Tabi of Kaf (1929) and we note that Mr J Barton
(Evelyn Denyer's husband) is listed as breeder/owner of a littermate of Bagla of Kaf. It is interesting to note that after Evelyn Denyer (supposedly) gave all her Afghan hounds to
Captain Fox, that a litter bred as late as 1929 should appear, bred by Evelyn Denyer's husband? Also, we find that Captain Fox bred a litter in 1930 containing Sahira , Prema and
Kilah of Kaf - another oddity - Captain Fox bred the litter, no Wyke affix on any of them, but we have Kaf affix
on Kilah of Kaf who was bred by and owned by Captain Fox. So now (1929 and 1930) we have two litters not bred by Evelyn Denyer but both carry her Kaf affix. We also noted that
Evelyn Denyer bred the hound Shad Par, owned by Beryl Fox , and again it did not carry the of Kaf affix. .
Although we don't fully understand the relationship and arrangements between Evelyn Denyer and Captain Fox, they were clearly close friends and collaborated in the development
of the breed over several years.
