1927 SOME USA AFGHAN HOUND TIDBITS
(by Steve Tillotson, December 2015)

1927 SOME USA TIDBITS

I recently obtained a copy of the AKC Gazette, March 1927, mainly for a photo of a couple of BM's on the front cover. (I have seen that photo before so need to track down my other copy so I can identify the two hounds). Anyways, I went through the Gazette to see if there were any other references to Afghan hounds. Not much found, but we can get a sense of the smallness and commencment of activity in the breed by some snippets from the 1927 Gazette.

REGISTRATIONS FEB 1927

There were zero Afghan registrations in February 1927 (and zero regs in Feb 1926). SHOW RESULTS

I found a couple of show results - Eastern Dog Club Show, Boston MA, Judge Dr H W Church. The exhibits were Zun, Sahib, Kabuter (all bred by Jean Manson, Bell Murray lineage) Shahjehan of Larkbeare (Bred by Capt Carpentier, UK, first owner Clara Bowring, Larkbeare UK). Found another show - Newark KC, NJ, Judge T Offerman, same hounds as above entered. Also Westminster 1927, Judge Alfred Dellmont, again same dogs above entered

JUDGES LICENSE

Athos Nilson (owner of Afghan hound Barberry Hill Charlie the first Afghan Hound to go BIS in California ) is listed as gaining his permanent AKC license to judge Cocker Spaniels, Pointers and Setters.

PITTSBURGH SHOW POSTPONED

THE Pittsburgh show scheduled for April 1927 was postponed until october due to a 100 day quarantine order set by the State of Pennsylvania (dont know the reason for this)

ALL BREED SHOWS

There were about 80 All Breed Shows listed for 1927). To get some perspective on that number, in the year 2015 there are around 1450 All Breed Shows scheduled. There were about 20 breed specific shows (specialties?) for 1927 but no specialty for Afghans because AHCA didnt exist until 1940

AFGHAN HOUNDS FORMAL ACCEPTANCE BY AKC

AKC accepted Afghan hounds in their stud book in 1926, so 1927 would have been the first full year of activities for the breeds pioneering enthusiasts.

ADVERTS

None for Afghan hounds in this edition of the Gazette

PRO HANDLERS

The Professinal Handlers Association was established in 1926 and in 1927 there were around 50 members. There is a multi page article in the Gazette and I'll type it up and post it on AHT in the near future

AKC SERVICES

It cost $2.00 to register a dog in 1927 $2.00 for a certified 3 gen pedigree, $5.00 for a certified 5 gen pedigree.

$50 PRIZE FROM AKC

AKC offered a $50.00 prize to the owner of any dog or bitch that went BIS during the year provided that dog was "American Bred".

OVERSEAS JUDGES

AKC announced that after March 1927 licences to judge will not be granted to persons not citizens of the United States unless they can submit evidence authenticated by their native Kennel Club that they are not dealers or handlers.
