We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Patricia Jones (Tarina Afghans, USA). Patricia had bred Afghan Hounds for over 5 decades and had personal experience and knowledge of the early Afghan Hound bloodlines, upon which her own breeding was based.
TARINA -THE EARLY YEARS
1. El Sayyad Lance Of Tarina
The earliest Afghan carrying the Tarina kennel name we find in our database is El Sayyad Lance Of Tarina, a black mask silver, bred by Glenn & Grace Beyer (USA, El Sayyad Kennels), and owned by Patricia Jones. Date of birth is not on file but we believe it's around 1959. The pedigree is shown below
El Sayyad Lance Of Tarina sired three litters that we know of (there may be more) -
- x Candida of Carmel litter whelped 3/10/1967 included the bitch Tarina Sandraya
- x Crown Crest Zarlonna litter welped 6/13/1967 included the dogs Tarina Magic Dragon and Tarina’s Banner Bright
- x Tar Bho Ghanie of Wyn-Flo litter whelped 3/5/1967 included the dog Tarina Mirage and bitch Tarina Shades of Grey.

2) Tarina Whispering Sands 1960 (bitch)
Pat acquired the bitch, Tarina Whispering Sands,born 04/26/1960, bred by J and W Barkett - (Am
Ch Crown Crest Zardonx x Mikai Tai Templedoll). The pedigree has a strong Crown Crest Influence.
Of particular note is Egypts Echo Of Crown Crest occuring on both sides of the pedigree. Echo's
pedigree contains the Afghanistan import to the USA by Lawerence Peters - Tazi Of Beg Tute and Saki Of
Paghman as well as the Indian import Fatima. These foundations, developed by Crown Crest
perpetuated the exotic blue-silver and shining silver coat colors epitomized by Ch Taejon Of
Crown Crest. The inbreeding chart shows Taejohn as the highest contributor, followed by Egypts
Echo.
We find 3 litters by Whispering Sands in the period 1962-1964 in our database. These litters
were bred by other breeders, which included - Martha & Kenneth Savidge (Marty-Kens kennel),
Bob Carder (Deja Vu Kennel). So perhaps Whispering Sands was loaned out on some kind of breeding terms/contract.
3) Tar Bho Ghanie of Wyn-Flo c. 1965 (bitch)
It appears that Pat also owned the bitch Tar Bho Ghanie of Wyn-Flo. A litter from Tar Bho in 1966 sired by
Am Ch Patrician’s Sherwood produced Tarina Reflection and Tarina Enchantment Another litter in 1967
sired by El Sayyad Lance of Tarina produced Tarina Mirage and Tarina Shades of Grey. These two litters
providing stock for Tarina's future breeding program. We mention that it "appears" that Pat owned Tar Bho, but we
haven't tracked down that ownership registration yet. Interstingly, (and another example of a Tarina bitch being
used by another kennel) we noted that Marcia Stoll of the famous Dic Mar kennel also used Dic Mar’s Moby Dick
to sire a litter out of Tar Bho in 1968. Pat did not apparently use any stock from this breeding.
Well, thats quite a lot of information to absorb. Let's look at a pedigree that will show how the first three generations
of Tarina breeding comes together, particularly with reference to the Tarina foundation stud dog El Sayyad Lance Of Tarina.
The study pedigree is that of Tarina Bright Eagle, Black Masked Silver dog, born 6/7/1974
