Molly Sharpe

Chaman Afghan Hounds UK Page 5
(By Steve Tillotson October 2013)

Molly 1937 Glasgow, Scotland, running several of her hounds

Let's look at Mollys first few litters (I excluded her Garrymhor Nazeem breedings as the line expired after two generations and does not figure in Chaman going forward). I have prepared a small list of available foundation bloodlines that Molly could have worked with
    Foundation Bloodlines
  • 1 Bell-Murray
  • 2 Ghazni
  • 3 Shahzada
  • 4 Afroz
  • 5 Ardmor Anthony
  • 6 Lakki Marwat

First few litters
1. Kulli Khan of Kuranda x Mollys "Safiya" (Total outcross involving lines 1/2/3)
2. Ch Westmill Bayezid Ansari x Mollys "Safiya" (Modest line 2 linebreeding influence, blended with lines 1/3/4)
3. Mollys "Ch Int Garrymhor Faiz-Bu-Hassid x Azura Chakrana (Mild lines 2 and 3 linebreeding influence, blended with lines 5 and one outcross line)
4. Mollys "Ch Taj Akbar of Chaman x MollysThofar (Mild lines 2 and 3 linebreeding influence, blended with lines 1/3/4)

Before we move on to the next stage of Chaman breeding, we need to look back at two of Mollys foundations - Ch Garrymhor Faiz-Bu-Hazid (d) and Garrymhor (b) Nazeem, litter brother and sister, sired by (import) Ardmor Anthony.

It seems that neither of these two foundation Chaman hounds are pivotal in the development of Chaman. Ch Garrymhor Faiz-Bu-Hazid legacy is perhaps more appreciated by other kennels that used him as a stud dog. His sister Garrymhor Nazeem was bred from but only one of the offspring went on to produce, and that is where Nazeem's line ended.

By contrast another Chaman foundation, the bitch Safiya is pivotal in the development at Chaman, as is Safiya's litter brother Amanullah also owned by Molly. What is the significance of this? Let's firstly just remind ourselves of the main import lines available to breeders in the era mid 1920's - 1930's (just before Molly started in the breed) -

  • 1 Bell-Murray
  • 2 Ghazni
  • 3 Shahzada
  • 4 Afroz
  • 5 Ardmor Anthony
  • 6 Lakki Marwat

Ardmor Anthony only sired one litter at Garrymhor, (and Molly had two from that litter, Faiz-Bu-Hazid and Nazeem) and then apparently he was found to be sterile. So after this first litter, #5 Ardmor Anthony's bloodline was only available indirectly via a descendent. #6 Lakki Marwat ceased to be active after 1936 and similarly his bloodline was only available indirectly via a descendent.Lakki's influence on the breed was conveyed via Garrymhor breeding that traced back to him. Garrymhor was a succesful kennel and stud service, so other breeders could acquire Garrymhor stock and integrate Ardmor Anthony lines into their breeding program. Molly didn't do this. Whilst she bred from her Ardmor Anthony son and daughter, their offspring contributed more to other kennels than they did to Chaman. The pivotal foundation for Chaman is the bitch Safiya, (a bloodline blend of lines 1/2/3/4 in the list below). Safiya was bred to dogs of lines 1 or 2, or a blend of both 1 and 2, and in most cases to a dog that also included lines 3 and 4 in their pedigree.

Let's just remind ourselves of the main import lines available to breeders of this era -

  • 1 Bell-Murray
  • 2 Ghazni
  • 3 Shahzada
  • 4 Afroz
  • 5 Ardmor Anthony
  • 6 Lakki Marwat

Garrymhor kennel used Ardmor Anthony. Geufron kennel used Lakki Marwat. These two kennels (setting aside Chaman for a moment) are probably the two most successful kennels that blended the different import lines. Ardmor Anthony and Lakki Marwat pre-dated Molly's commencement in the breed. When Molly started out Ardmor Anthony was sterile and Lakki Marwat sired his last litter in 1936 a year after Molly started in the breed. Thus, whatever "blend" of bloodlines Molly would eventually pursue, she could only get Ardmor Anthony/Lakki Marwat bloodlines via a descendent, ie, no clean source for these two dogs lines.

The minimal contribution found in Chaman pedigrees for these two imports is one factor that ensured Molly's "blend" would be different to her predecessors, such as Garrymhor and Geufron. Further, the balance of Bell-Murray and Ghazni blood in Garrymhor and Geufron bloodlines was impacted by the fact that these earlier breeders originally had the 6 lines above to work with. By contrast when Molly started lines 3-6 had expired and were only available indirectly via a descendent. Molly did have access to pure Bell-Murray and pure Ghazni bloodlines, but only just. In her first litter Molly used Kulli Khan of Kuranda, the very last registered pure bred Bell-Murray.

As Molly edged towards the 1950's we see a pivotal change, litters by an outside stud used on three different Chaman bitches. I think we can safely assume that Molly appreciated the stud dog, and by breeding him to four different bitches this must have been a definite move to implant the stud dogs lines into her breeding pool. The stud dog was Mohammed Ali Of Acklam. Interestingly Mohammed Ali only sired 4 litters - all Chaman. He was bred by Mrs Howard Gibson (Acklam), the kennels were located in Jersey, a small island betwen southern England and northern France. Mrs Gibson started with a Geufron.

So why did Molly use Mohammed Aly? Readers will recall on page 2 we quoted what Molly wrote in 1977 - "Before the war Mrs Wood's Ch Westmill Ben Havid, a black and tan, had impressed me, and I still think him the finest Afghan I have seen. I used Ch Westmill Bayezid Ansari - to improve heads". So Molly greatly admired these two Westmill hounds - both of which are in Mohammed Ali's pedigree. Also Ch Asri Havid of Ghazni that Molly sought to use for a stud (but Asri Havid didn't oblige) is in the pedigree. Perhaps these hounds are the reason she used Mohammed Ali?
