4. Influence and Significance Of The Peters Imports
As Mr. Smith mentioned earlier, Tazi and Saki produced a total of four litters from their breedings in 1935, 1936 1937 and 1939. In addition to the Tazi x Saki breedings, Tazi was used at stud and sired litters for others kennels in 1939, 1949 and 1941. As Mr. Smith also mentioned, the remote location of the Peters kennel (Port Blakely, Washington) didn't lend itself to easy interactions with breeders located elsewhere in the country and led to Laurance Peters eventually giving up breeding.
However, whilst Mr. Peters breeding was small in quantity it would prove to be significant in the development of the breed. For example in the 1937 Tazi x Saki litter was the gray bitch Blue Mist Of Egypt, owned by Dr & Mrs. Frank Porter Miller, located in Los Angeles, California. The Millers bred their black (photo suggests black, AKC reg states gold/golden brindle, but photo supports black rather than gold) dog Sahib Of Prides Hill (Badshah Of Ainsdart x Shireen Of Prides Hill) to Blue Mist Of Egypt. This was the only litter from Blue Mist Of Egypt and the litter produced 2 reds, 1 black, 1 cream and three gray offspring, the litter whelped 10/27/1941.

A black bitch from this 1941 litter - Ranee Yasitt, became the foundation of Mr. Mrs. Williams El Kedar kennel. A red dog from this litter - Little Sahib, went to Joseph Dodds kennel in Canada where she became a champion and also produced a Canadian champion in her first litter for Mr. Dodds. Two gray bitches from this litter -
Blue Mist Of Grandeur and Egyptian Queen Of Grandeur went to Sunny Shay (Grandeur) in New York. We cannot overstate the significance to the breed of this line becoming part of the Grandeur breeding program. If the Grandeur connection wasn't significant enough in it's own right, there is yet another important element in this story - another littermate, the cream dog - Am Ch Sinbad The Sailor was retained by the Millers, more on this shortly. Time for some pedigrees to help us see how this litter contributed so much to the breed.

Blue Mist Of Egypt is right at the beginning of the Grandeur line sometimes referred to as "the string of pearls"
We mentioned Am Ch Sinbad The Sailor above, Let's look at where this littermate of Blue Mist Of Grandeur takes us...Sinbad sired several litters, the most significant breeding produced Felt's Thief Of Bagdad, whelped 1946/05/04, bred by Joe Felt and owned by Kay Finch of Crown Crest.

We have kind of arrived at the headline news of Tazi and Saki, ie Grandeur and Crown Crest. There is still a lot more influence of Tazi and Saki to be mentioned, in particular the incorporation of the bloodlines by Benjamin R Decker (Jac-A-Leen) and Marjorie Walker (Far Away) and several others early kennels.

Undoubtedly, the Peters imports of Tazi and Saki have proven to be of tremendous importance to the development of the breed in the US. This is not the full story and I will probably return to the topic of the Peters imports at a future date. Steve T.
