Vintage British-Pathe Newsreels
featuring Afghan Hounds 1923-1965

(Compiled by Steve Tillotson 2012)

British-Pathe newsreels over the last century captured all sorts of interesting events, including dog shows. Following extensive research by AHT we are delighted to have located some British-Pathe newsreels of Afghan hounds. Not just any Afghan hounds, but some pretty important hounds !. When British-Pathe filmed major dog shows such as Crufts (UK), Westminster Kennel Club (USA) we are able to reference our show catalogues for those shows and able to identify specific Afghan hounds in the British-Pathe clips

One such exciting find (the first exhibit on this page) relates to Ch Badshah Of Ainsdart. We have British-Pathe newsreel clips of Badshah at Crufts in 1932 AND remarkably British-Pathe newsreel clips of him at Westminster Kennel Club in 1935. Additionally we are able to capture screen grabs from these British-Pathe newsreel clips which provide us with large photographs which give us a closer look at the hounds than other vintage photgraphs of the past have done. So these British-Pathe newsreels are very important and helpful. Thank you British-Pathe. I have deliberately left the "copyright" watermark on the British-Pathe screen grabs and there is a link to the British-Pathe website where you can view the actual clips

We provide a link to the original British-Pathe newsreels and tell you how many seconds into each movie the Afghan hounds appear. Sometimes they only appear for a few seconds so you may have to view the clip again if you missed it first time round. We haven't neccessarily listed the photos in chronological order, in some cases we have listed them sequentially because (example Badshah clips) it's more convenient to list his clips one after the other, rather than having to jump up and down the page

CLIP 1
CRYSTAL PALACE, LONDON 1932 from "Fourleggers"

Photo's #3 and #4 are of particular interest to us. The brindle Afghan hound at the back of the show ring, is, we believe, Ch Badshah of Ainsdart.

CLIP 2
WESTMINSTER KC, NEW YORK, 1935 from "Portrait Of A Gentleman"

This clip provides us some with superb closeups of Ch Badshah Of Ainsdart. Badshah was exported to the Prides Hill kennels )Connecticut, MA, USA) of Q A Shaw Mckean in 1934, so this must have been Badshah's first appearance at Westminster?

Another very interesting clip. We have yet to research show entry records to attempt to identify the hounds in the clip, but we will do eventually

L/S's and M/S's of Sir Herbert Barker the famous bones setter with his dog (Afghan hound). The commentator says that the controversial figure is to have a series of films made about him.

This clip was filmed at a place called "Skindles" which is on the River Thames about 30 miles west of London. We have yet to track down the actual dog show and names of the hounds in the clip.

Now, this clip involves an amazing coincidence. 10 years ago! I purchased a "negative" taken from a newsreel clip. It now transpires that that "negative" came from this very newsreel clip. You can read the associated story here about researching that negative photo 10 years ago!

An easy person for me to recognize - Ms Eileen Snelling (Khorrassan). I'm pretty sure I know the names of the hounds too, but I need to check my files before adding their names, which I will do shortly

CRUFT'S DOG SHOW 1965

The Opening shot is Allan Brooks (Bondor) - there was a black Bondor dog - Bondor Othello - could be him. Marna Dods (Horningsea) was showing Mustagh Ata. Ringside we saw Hazel Munro sitting beside Albert Munro. Dan James (Jahadi) standing behind the seated ringsiders.
