Khelat is clearly nothing like an Afghan Hound, but now, at least, with thanks to Jess Ruffner-Booth we
know what he looked like. Some examples of his entry in show catalogues is shown below
some additional information -
Mr. W. K. Taunton's Afghan Sheep-dog Khielat. We have pleasure in giving a portrait of this dog, one of tbe moat notable, foreign specimens ever, seen on our benches, and yet so like our own sheep-dogs that he ouldd easily win if our classes were not usually restricted to ' Old English ' sheep-dogs. Khelat was brought from the far north ot Afghanistan by an English regiment on its return from service there and was presented to Mr. Taunton by Lieutenant E. Gunner R. H. A. He was first shown at Eastbourne in1881, and has since won many prizes, including firsts at Alexandra Palace, 'Sheffield, Frome, Warwick, Maidstone, and elsewhere. .he has a very dense undercoat, and also the well-feathered legs so much esteemed. Readers will doubtless be surprised to learn that the dog has no ears, those appendages having evidently been torn off close to the skull. The openings are, however, well covered by the hair, which is very thick and long on the head. Khelat has a good honest bark, an accomplishment doubtless due to his long residence in Mr. Tauntoon's kennels, and which differs widely from the ' yelp ' more or less common to ' foreign ' dogs. — (Fanciers Gazette).
