New York , NY – 11 May 2011. The American Kennel Club® is pleased to announce that 27 Junior Scholarships have been awarded to students from 19 states. The scholarships for high school, college and graduate school students range from $1,000 to $3,000 for each student. “This year’s recipients have demonstrated academic success as well as impressive AKC involvement and we are happy to honor each of them with an AKC Junior Scholarship,” said Mari-Beth O’Neill, AVP of Customer Service. “We hope that these funds nurture their growth and development, and that they’ll continue to be active participants in AKC clubs and events long into the future.” Applicants were evaluated based on academic history and involvement in the sport of purebred dogs with special consideration for those who were active in AKC clubs and events. In addition, applicants were required to submit an essay describing their future involvement in purebred dogs and with the AKC. The 27 recipients represent a cross section of the fancy today, with participation in many different AKC events. Students range from third and fourth generation exhibitors to those who found their way to their first dog events by chance. Their achievements include winning the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Junior Showmanship Competition, competing at the AKC National Agility Championship, and becoming Honor Society members and Class Valedictorians.
