1. ABOUT FRIZLEY
Frizley was the kennel affix belonging to Mrs A B Wlilan, of Bradford, Yorkshire, England. The kennel was active from 1924 through to the end of the 1920's. One of the litters carying the Frizley affix was bred by a friend of Mrs Willan's - Mrs Mary Waddington, who resided close by in Keighley, Yorkshire, England. Mrs Willan was Secretary of The Afghan Hound Club for 1926/7, following in the footsteps of Evelyn Denyer (Kaf), the club's first Secretary.

Mrs Willan also bred and showed Pekingnese from around 1924. Mrs Willan's kennel affix derived its name from the property they lived in - "Frizley Old Hall" Frizinghall Road, Bradford, which is a grade 2 listed building dating back to 1727. A 2-storey hall with unusually sophisticated details for a house of this period in the Bradford area. Of the same type as the slightly later Frizingley Hall which is built on to the west side. Sandstone fairly thin "brick" with flush quoins. Stone slate roof, coped gable ends, corniced chimneys and moulded stone eaves. Moulded string course between storeys which breaks forward to four cornice over central doorway. Three windows, 4 light squared frame square mullioned flanking with 2 light to centre of first floor. Panelled door contained in stone eared architrave surround and enriched frieze of delicately carved leaves with medallion inscribed LJD over date. The rear elevation is also symmetrical about a square mullioned double transomed stair light. The square mullioned windows here are virtually the earliest dated examples in the Bradford area.

2. FRIZLEY AND WADDINGTON BREEDING
There are very few photographs of Frizley Afghan hounds known to us. We recently found a photograph of a 1925 litter of Frizley Afghan hounds published in Dog World Annual, 1927. Photo shown below -

The foundations of Frizley were two bitches bred by Major Bell-Murray - Ch Shadi a fawn bitch whelped 7/27/1924 (Baluch x Oolu) acquired in May 1925. Shadi was the 6th champion of record for the breed and gained her title in 1929.The second bitch was Buchee a white bitch whelped 17/4/1924 (Khym x Daghai) acquired in August 1925. Both hounds were previously owned by Jean Manson (Cove) following the transfer by Major Bell-Murray of all his hounds to Miss Manson in 1924.

Only three litters were born at Frizley -

FIRST FRIZLEY LITTER
The first Frizley litter whelped 20/8/1925 (Potentate x Buchee) and the litter is shown in the photo above. One from this litter, a white bitch - Nooroo Begum of Frizley was acquired by Mr and Mrs Fred Waddington and was the foundation bitch for their small kennel. Noroo produced one litter for the Waddingtons. We are fortunate to have found in the newspaper archives (credit Lyall Payne for the original find. In 2020 we found an almost identical photo that is lighter/clearer which we now show below.) a photo of Mary Waddington exhibiting three of her Afghans from this single litter at the Craven District Dog Show, Skipton, Yorkshire in 1929. We undertook further research and also found the results from the show. Mrs Waddington's three Afghan hounds were the only Afghan hounds entered, and the names of her hounds exhibited on the day were - Ulema (bitch), Sherzaman (dog) and Kataghan (dog). Photo below -

There are three hounds with Mrs Waddington. The hounds were all Juniors at the show and the one in the middle is smaller, so we presume this to be the bitch Ulema.

WADDINGTON LITTER
Mrs Waddington's breeding was of pure Frizley lineage. The litter whelped on 9/20/1928 (Derick of Frizley x Nooroo Begum of Frizley). Sadly we do not have the details on Derick Of Frizley's breeding. However, noting that Mrs Willan only bred three litters, (we can discount the third litter bred in 1928 because of the date), then Derick must have been from either the 1925 or 1926 Frizley litter, in which case we can probably safely assume that the sire was Potentate , as the two previous Frizley litters (1925 and 1926) were both sired by Potentate. Mrs Willan acquired one from the 1928 Waddington litter - a white bitch, Zillah of Frizley but she was not bred from.

SECOND FRIZLEY LITTER
The second Frizley bred litter was sired by Potentate out of Mrs Willan's Ch Shadi and whelped 22/7/1926. Four were registered from this litter. Phyllis Robson wrote in an advert for the Frizley kennels in late 1927 - "Shadi is a lovely headed bitch, which has won 2 Challenge Certificates and Specials for best headed hound. She is a grand brood bitch, and one of her last litter went to Holland and three found homes in England".

The reference to Holland refers to the fawn dog Dal Kanda of Frizley who was exported to the Barukhzy kennel of Han Jungeling in the Netherlands. Mr Jungeling wrote about his hounds in the magazine "de Hond" in 1928 as follows - "Our Afghan Greyhounds or Barukhzy Dogs can do battle with the best English exhibition exemples. Our Begum Of Cove, the famous fawn colored female with black mask, has won three championship prizes. She held her mother duties, for the first time this year a litter of 10 and in the coming season will make their mark. (AHT comment - this litter was Baruhkzy litter #1, born 2/14/1928, a breeding between Dal Kanda of Frizley x Begum of Cove), both hounds imported from the UK. This first litter was a pure Bell Murray breeding which produced 10 gold offspring).

THIRD FRIZLEY LITTER
The third and final Frizley bred litter whelped 3/31/1928 (Baroo Khan of Frizley x Paula of Frizley). We have details of two from this litter, a dog Oolaf of Frizley and a Bitch Souriya
