DENMARK 1997
3rd World Afghan Congress Report #3
Susan Rhodes (UK)

The Third Afghan Hound World Congress, organised by Ulf and Lotte Jorgensen, was held at the Marienlyst Hotel and Conference Centre, Elsinore, Denmark between 19th & 20th.June. This was followed by the Danish Afghan Hound Club's 25th.Anniversary Show on the 21st.June, also at Elsinore, judged by Edwina Thomas from Australia, and Afghans at the Danish Kennel Club' s European Dog Show at the Bella Centre, Copenhagen judged by Lotte Jorgensen herself on the 22nd.June.

Among the 150 or so delegates at the Congress from some 19 countries it was particularly pleasing to see enthusiasts from Estonia, Latvia, Slovakia and Russia who had also brought their dogs to show at the Danish AHC's show on the 21st. There was also a sizeable representation from Australia who very professionally promoted the 4th.World Congress which they plan to hold in Sydney NSW in April 2000.

Speakers at the Congress included Dave Frei, Dennis Eschbach and Donna Broucek from the USA, Wendy Slatyer, Edwina Thomas and Pauline Hewitt from Australia, Susan Rhodes and Sue Virgo from the U.K., Christine Jernberg and Birgitta Runmarker from Sweden and Kirsten Nielson and Lotte Jorgensen from Denmark. Topics included "Grooming, trimming and handling", "Advantages and disadvantages of using frozen semen", "A World-Wide Afghan Hound Standard", "How to become a successful breeder", and some random thoughts on "Who are we breeding for ?" At times it was clear that, even if the common language of the conference was English, different delegates put different interpretations on key words under discussion - 'trimming' was a particularly contentious example ! Almost the last act of the Congress was to agree that a 5th.Congress should be held in Belgium in 2003.

As well as the more formal aspects ofthe Congress, on Thursday 19th. the Scandinavian Afghan Hound Clubs sponsored a Buffet in the Marienlyst Salon which was followed by an informal dance and on Friday we had an equally enjoyable indoor barbeque when the weather precluded the planned outside event !

Ulf and Lotte Jorgensen are to be congratulated on the hard work they put into making the Congress such a success. The venue was comfortable and well appointed, the food overwhelming and the informal discussions late into the night stimulating. For those of us used to seeing only British hounds it was eye opening indeed to see the range and quality of dogs assembled at the Danish Afghan Hound Club's 25th Anniversary show, from the U.S.A. to Russsia, from Estonia to Italy to Greece, as well as the more understandable numbers from the Scandinavian countries themselves. Best in Show was the dog, Danish, Swedish & U.S. Champion Boxadan Double Trouble, flown in from the U.S.A. for the event and the Best Bitch was Ar. & Can. Champion Korelec's Killimanjaro, U.S. bred and Norwegian/Swiss owned. A beautifully produced catalogue will be my most memorable souvenir of the occasion.
