Claudia Kurrek

The 3rd Afghan Hound World Congress was held in Elsinore, Denmark on June 19-20, 1997. Most of the work behind this succesful and unforgettable event was done by Ulf Jorgensen and his wife Lotte of Boxadan fame.

More than 250 people from most parts of the world had gathered at the Marienlyst hotel, where everybody, dogs included, had a comfortable stay - unfortunately the weather did not co-operate and the Friday barbeque had to be held indoors.

On Thursday the Congress startet with some short speeches presenting the Scadinavian Afghan Hound Clubs. The Finnish Club had an interesting stand with lots of Afghan pictures, and Sweden was represented by a fantastic photo collection of the world renowned El Khyria Kennel.

A panel discussion followed with the panel consisting of breeder-judge Ms. Birgitha Runmarker, Sweden, Sighthound-judge Mr. Espen Engh, Norway and Afghan Hound Review publisher Paul Lepiane, USA.

Dr. Jens Jacobsen from the IAMS - Company in Denmark, talked very informative about the "Optimal nutrition for your dog".

"The Afghan Hound Court" was an new invention and we had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Dave Frei, USA, and Mr. Mark Cocozza, England, doing their best as defendant and prosecutor in two delicate cases.

A dinner followed in the evening and there was lots of typically Scandinavian food that everybody enjoyed as well as dance to popular music from an entertaining band - and the Afghan Hound talk went on until early morning in the bar !

Friday started with a "Welcome" from Mr. Ulf Jorgensen and informations about the 1st and the 2nd World Congress from Mrs. Sue Virgo, England, and Mr. Dave Frei, USA. After this, there was a number of speakers, namely Ms. Runmarker, who made some comparisons of the different standards. Mr. Roberto Posa from Switzerland who talked about "Trends in Afghan Hound during the Years" and Mrs. Susan Rhodes, England, asked "Who are we breeding ?"

Mrs. Wendy Slatyer from Australia held a very well prepared talk an Artificial Insemination, Dr. Dennis Eschbach, USA, lectured about "Chiropractic's Affect on the Afghan Hound's Gait und Symmetri in Motion", and Mrs. Pauline Hewitt, Australia, and Donna Broucek, USA, taught us how to become succesful breeders of Afghan Hounds.

Holland's Gerard Jipping held an informative lecture on "What's the right type ?", and not to forget Ms. Christina Jernberg of El Khyria kennels in Sweden, who made one of her appearances and gave a speech on her views of the breed. She did this in Swedish and was assisted by Birgitha Rumarker as a translator. Christina Jernberg was awarded of a standing ovation and it was the highlight of the congress.

Ms. Kirsten Nielsen and Mrs. Lotte Jorgensen, Denmark, showed us, how to "trim" an afghan for shows on a live object "Tracey" - this started a heated discussion on wether to trim or not and where to draw the line.

At the end of the Congress, Ms. Edwina Joy Thomas, Australia, gave us some information on the next World Congress, that will be held in Australia in year 2000.

Mr. Louis Dehaes and Mrs. Audrie Vansteelant-Benoit from Belgium invited to the 5th World Congress in Belgium in year 2002, but also the Yorkshire Afghan Hound Society in England have planned to organize the 5th Congress, which should be in Yorkshire in year 2003. A consultative referendum from the audience gave majority to Belgium.

Mr. Dave Frei brought with him the marvellous video superbly put together by the Americans George Bell and Chris Terrell. This film started and ended thi beautifully organized two days Congress at the luxerious Marienlyst Hotel.

The congress was followed by The Danish Afghan Hound Club's 25 Years Jubilee Speciality Show, judged by Ms. Edwina Joy Thomas and Ms. Pamela Bennett from Australia. There were 125 entries and Best In Show was a very international affair as it went to Danish bred DKch Sch USAch Norv96 Boxadan Double Trouble, co-owned and shown by Mr. Jay Hafford from the USA. A very popular and exciting show.
