RACES de CHIENS
by Compte Henri Bylandt 1897 edition
(Article compiled by Steve Tillotson August 2018)

Clifford "Doggie" Hubbard in his book informs us that "de Bylant's Les Races de Chiens (1894), is an incredibly comprehensive work. The third edition was published in 1905 with the text covering over 300 breeds and varieties, written in French, English, German and Dutch", Hubbard also informs us that some of the articles by Leighton ("New Book Of The Dog, 1907") on relatively rare breeds appear to have been influenced by de Bylant's Les Races de Chiens (1894 edition),

Below is a larger image of the bottom photo, page three above.
Apprently the photo is of a painting by the famous French artist P Marlee
http://www.afghanhoundtimes.com RACES de CHIENS, painting by P Marlee

The Wardle photo is entitled Hounds Of Asia, the left hand subject looking like an Afghan hound, the right hand subject possibly a Saluki? The Marlee photo is entitled Hound of Afghanistan and appears to be an Afghan hound. A particular value of this important Bylandt work is that it conveys perhaps, the earliest meaningful description and image that closely resembles the Afghan hound.
