Breeders / Imports
UPDATE (by Steve Tillotson) May 2012
We have recently uncovered some additional information about Afghans in Brazil as early as 1947.
Click here to view the update
Twenty years ago was the "Age of the Afghans" in the Brazilian cinology. There were many enthusiasts of the breed, resulting on an increasing number of breeders and exhibitors. Many imports were made, mostly from United States, and every year there was at least one annual specialty in São Paulo, with judges such Kay Finch, Bo Bengston, Frank Sabella, Anne Rogers Clark and others..
In the 70's the most relevant breeders were Lord Leo, Muiraquitan, La Querencia, Honey Hair, Ziana Kennels (all in São Paulo) and Sakkara's (Rio de Janeiro)..
Laedi Miranda's kennel, Lord Leo, was very active in the early 70's and was based on a combination of Argentinean with Sakkara's lines. At that time, the Brazilian Kennel Club didn't recognise the Domino colour and so her first domino litter was registered as self masked cream. At that same time, Jose Carlos Guimaraes, of the famous Sakkara's Kennel, unhappy with the dictatorship of the Brazilian Kennel Club, just for fun decided to register some of his Afghans as Mahogany Sable ! Sakkara's history is surrounded by fame, money, mystery and tragedy. Jose Carlos Guimaraes was the director of one of the most important Brazilian Banks. At a young age, he was also a very conscious and successful breeder/exhibitor, with many champions to his credit. His most famous dog was with no doubt the great BIS Int. Ch. Sakkara's Khnum. It is said that he was poisoned by a jealous and sick exhibitor and died on the late 70's. Ze Carlos (as he was known among his friends) made his breeding plan based on the Crown Crest lines. He imported many El Sayyad dogs and then imported directly from the Crown Crest Kennels. Sakkara's would have been one of the greatest kennels to this date if wasn't by the tragic and mysterious death of Ze Carlos in the early 80's. Some of the Sakkara's stock has been used by the contemporary Akhenaton Kennels of Ydenice Viana (Rio de Janeiro). .
The Muiraquitan Kennel bred briefly but made many imports from the Tully's Kennel (based on Khayam's Apollo) and in 1975 stopped all activities. All the imported stock became property of the La Querencia kennel, owned by Roselys Bülau. Mrs. Bülau also owned the top producer of all times in Brazil, the US import, BIS Ch. Alarickhans Spellbinder, "Ben" (Ch. Bakali Macbeth x Ch. Alarickhans Shalon). He sired many champions, but the most famous one was probably Yur of Honey Hair, BIS winner of the 4th Sunny Shay Specialty Cup, judged by the legendary breeder/judge Kay Finch. .
The Afghans of Honey Hair, of Renata de Oliveira Prieto, were early based on the Argentinean stock made available through the Lord Leo Kennel and then later progressed to work with the Coastwind and Karzak's (Akaba's) bloodline. They imported many Afghans from the Coastwind kennels and were also the owners of the first bitch to be bred to the great Am.Ch. Coastwind Jubilan Osiris. That litter produced the great stud dog Ch. Falstaff the Buster who was later used by House of Marut, Carnival, Ziana and Stenara Kennels just to name a few..
Ildefonso Pessoa-Monteiro and Angelo Leme Cavalheiro, of Ziana Kennels, were top winning exhibitors and very conscious breeders. Their imports and breeding program consisted of linebreedings on the American Grandeur, through Zardin's and Willowmoor kennels. Both Zardin's and Willowmoor had inbred pedigrees, back to Shirkhan/Infashia of Grandeur. With a campaign of just about 18 months of showing, Multi BIS, SBIS, Int.Ch. Zardin's Zoroaster became the Top Afghan of the 70's, and one of the Top Ten All Breed Dogs of Brazil of the decade. Ziana Kennels was very active, with many imports from Willowmoor and later, Coastwind/Jubilan kennels, until the decease of Mr. Pessoa-Monteiro in 1994. Now Guilherme Vianna, who is Ziana's co-owner since the mid 80's, has kept some of the dogs. There are some of the Ziana/Willowmoor bitches currently in the USA with June Matarazzo (Willowmoor)..
In the 80's were formed, among others, the kennels Stenara, Good News, Golden Brick Road, and Carnival in São Paulo, El Tukzhar in Rio de Janeiro, and Hilmand's in Espirito Santo. .
Good News' kennel imported many Afghans from the US. The first was the Sky Blue Brindle Dynasty's Good News. "Goody" caused frisson on the ring side for his exotic color and gorgeous and luxurious coat. Their most important dog was the American import Coastwind Pina Colada. "Pina" was the Top Winning Afghan in Brazil in the 80's, and was largely used as stud dog by many breeders. His owner Mr. Walter Lacerda also imported several bitches from Coastwind, as well as a dog from the Genesis kennel (USA). .
In 1980 the Golden Brick Road kennel entered the show ring and imported several Afghans from the United States, each one from a different bloodline. The first import was a domino bitch from the Kadalla's kennel and Mrs. Foschi finally made the, then, exotic domino colour acceptable! American bred Zuran's Merely Unique was among the imports, and when the kennel closed the activities she was bought by Mr. Ronaldo S.O. Morais, from Minas Gerais. The last import, Casbar Fatal Vision, is still present on the pedigrees of at least 3 today's active breeders, that follow Mrs. Lilian Keber Foschi lines (Excalibur Quest, Netzach and Peacemaker's, all from São Paulo)..
El Tukzhar's bloodline (Dr. Orlando Lopes, Rio de Janeiro) comes from Coastwind and Kabik's. More recently, were introduced Cobra Cuyahoga (American bred, BOS/World Champion at Switzerland 1994, and currently owned by the Argentinean kennel Ave Maria), and a female from Germany, daughter of El Khaira Red Command (Australia) x El Ditshund Hadan (Germany). .
Stenara registered the affix on 4th July, 1980. The owners Radmila and Zorana Bielovic started with a male imported from Argentina (Jacqueline Kubat's Dragonfly Kennels). He was a father/daughter inbred based on the Grandeur bloodline (his father was son of Westwind's Dorian of Grandeur, USA). The next was a female from Ziana Kennels (Zardin's Zoroaster x Westhill Infashiana of Zardin, both sired by Zardin's Bar Kochba), also heavily based on the Grandeur lines. Stenara has been working with that same line since then. In the 90's, after reaching a solid inbred level, the Coastwind/Jubilan lineage was introduced to Stenara's breeding program (through Falstaff the Buster). Luiz Fernando Kazuhiro Aoki is now living in the USA, co-working with Stenara. While in Brazil, he bred briefly but heavily on the Mecca's/Grandeur lines using a father/daughter to uncle mating, all going back to Alarickhans Spellbinder. He also at age 14, handled his first champion male to be among the top 20 Afghans of the Country in the early 80's. .
In 89 Claudinei Mathias, Carnival Afghans, started with a female from Good News. Later he acquired the Brazilian bred male Ch. Falstaff the Buster, out of both American sire (Coastwind) and dam (Karzak's), which was his top producer. Buster's most noticeable products were in co-breeding with Ziana and Stenara. English judge/breeder Mrs. Pauline Gibbs (Montravia) appreciated so much the type of Carnival Ziana King's Handsome, and awarded him a reserve Best in Show. At 1997 Specialty, Buster's son Carnival Stenara Roller Coaster went Best In Show, and is his grand daughter Stenara Magie Noire went Best Opposite Sex (she is sired by Carnival Ziana Lightning Bolt - now in USA, litter brother to Handsome). Claudinei Mathias is a deep studious of domestic and foreign bloodlines/pedigrees, and his breeding program is now directed to inbreedings to Falstaff the Buster..
Some time after closing activities (87-88), part of the Good News stock went to José Altair de Morais, from Espirito Santo, and he started to breed Afghans. Hilmand's Afghans became more prominent after the campaign of Hilmand's Highlander, promoted by exhibitor Sonia Costa Pereira, who also had imported his grandfather Le Jaim de Ave Maria. Good News and Ave Maria (Argentina) are the lines used by Jose Altair, and he has been, recently, successfully working with the American Abaca/Sha-Cone Kennels..
Today's breeders and imports.
Today's most active breeders are Netzach, Excalibur Quest, Hilmand's, Carnival, Peacemaker's, Akhenaton (who incorporated Sakkara's with Golden Brick Road stock), and other constant breeders in Brasilia, Fortaleza, Minas Gerais, Rio and South Brazil. From the old breeders (early 80's) the only remaining are El Tukzhar and Stenara. In 1995 Stenara was awarded the 3rd Top Breeder of all Brazil (all-breeds), one of the highest positions achieved by an Afghan Hound breeder to date..
Many imports were made recently, and to name a few, they are from Kirkwind (USA), Von Haussman (Chile - by the American Thaon's out of a Genesis/Chilean bred bitch ) - both of Excalibur Quest (Ana Beatriz Leite Dias & Mario Knoll, São Paulo). Von Haussman is also present in the stock of Mrs. Leila Rebello (Rebello's Beauty Kennel, Rio Grande do Sul), with many winnings in South Brazil. Mrs. Rebello also imported a Huilaco's male from Spain (sired by Tifarah's - USA). Sonia Costa Pereira (São Paulo) has imports from Abaca's (USA), and from the French/Spanish Des Jardins d'Allah (by the American Desiree Tobias). All of the mentioned are currently being shown in Brazil..
The "Sunny Shay Specialty Cups".
From 1978 to 1984, the last one in 1989, were held 10 Specialty shows, named "Sunny Shay Specialty Cups". In June 1978 Mrs. Sunny Shay (Afghans of Grandeur, USA) died of an heart attack in the show ring, handling her exotic Ch. Blue Boy of Grandeur. For her respect and love dedicated to the dogs, her extraordinary perception as breeder, and her great contribution to the improvement of the breed, Brazilian enthusiasts of Afghan Hounds decided to create those cups in her honour, to be given for both Specialty Best in Show and Opposite Sex. Although the Brazilian official cinology is affiliated to FCI, and the shows follows its rules and breed standards, the most of the past and present imports, and therefore the background bloodlines of today's Afghans, had come from the United States. The same for other breeds, with just a few exceptions. In the early 70's some English imports may have been made, but the great push was done from the mid 70's to mid 80's - from 1978 to 1982 were imported 56 Afghans, from USA, Argentina and Spain. .
It's not easy to give a quick look of about 20 years of breeding. The purpose was just to make an introduction to the today's scenery of the Afghan Hounds in Brazil, so some details may have been omitted, or even forgotten. I would like to thank Claudinei Mathias and Luiz Fernando K. Aoki for some crucial information about the early breeders and imports. I apologise if something or someone is missing in this overview, and encourage other Brazilian fanciers to do their contributions.
Brazilian Cinology Today
Ruler of all official Kennel Clubs in Brazil is CBKC, established in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, and President is Mr. Sergio Meira Lopes de Castro. CBKC is the responsible for all registers, pedigrees and promotional titles. CBKC is affiliated to FCI and is under its rules. The same for breed standards and judging system (10 groups - Afghan Hound belonging to the 10th Group).

UPDATE May 2012
Whilst researching and preparing the AHCA speciality report for 1947 we found the folllowing snippet in the source document -
:"The first Afghan believed to be headed for Brazil waas acquired by L. Salazar Regueira, a director of a Rio de Janeiro bank, who purchased Ya Hak;s Indigo from Frank D Sachwing of Cedars PA., immediately after the show."
We are checking with our friends in Brazil and if we uncover any further details we will post them here. However it is interesting to note that this snippet reference pre-dates the previously known date of the Afghan Hounds introduction into Brazil by some 25 years. We have also since discovered that an Afghan from England (Zulu Of Westover) was also purchased by L. Salazar Regueira also around 1947, so he would have had two afghans (dog and bitch), with which to start a breeding program. The two pedigrees are shown below.
