The Afghan Hound in Australia - A Brief History by Jim Hickie , Gengala Afghans, Australia. (Page 4)
To this stage this brief history has concentrated on the imports that
arrived in Australia for it was
from these dogs that the breed developed in this country and they have
largely determined the the
direction that the breed has taken here. However the imports were rarely
the great winners in the
showrings other than the few already mentioned. Of nearly one hundred
and fifty Specialty Shows held
in Australia since the first in 1956 only sixteen shows have been won
by a total of nine imported
dogs
These dogs were:
- Ch. Chandhara Hashim Yakoub (U.K.) -1
- Ch. Ajman Shunawar (U.K.) - 1
- Ch. Chandhara Tardis Arrakesh (U.K.) - 4
- Eng./Aust Ch. Mazari of Carloway (U.K.) - 1
- Eng./Aust. Ch. Waliwog of Carloway (U.K.) - 1
- Ch. Coastwind Holyman (U.S.A.) - 3
- Ch. Fubari Kusan Kabul (U.K.) - 1
- Am. Ch. Huzzah Jack Frost (U.S.A.) - 1
- Ch. Kabik's Limelite of Aries (U.S.A.) - 3
While most of the above imports, and others, are still represented in
the pedigrees of modern winners
it is to the credit of Australian breeders that they have been able to
develop and maintain high quality
stock from the early post World War 11 years right through to the
present day. The more recent
dogs that that have proved to be important producers include the
following:
First is the brindle dog Ch. Quom Star Spangld Banner, (Ch. Fermoy Holy
Joe X Ch Quom
Everybody's Talkin ) who went Best in Show at Sydney Royal in 1979. He
is the sire of around fifty
champions, but even more importantly his influence has continued through
his progeny. In particular
mention must be made of Ch. Djhs Fudpucker, winner of three Specialty
Best in Shows and Ch.
Rahzmundah Mr. America another Specialty Best in Show winner and sire
of a number of
champions. Rahzmundah Psidium (a brother to Mr. America) was exported to
Sweden where he
became an International Champion and a very important sire. Among the
many significant bitches
sired by this dog some of the more important are the Specialty Best in
Show winner Ch. Aries My
Stars, her sister Ch. Aries Blonds Havmorfun and Ch. Xebec Chrissy's
Gift, the latter two being
Specialty C.C. Winners and foundation bitches for the Hickie's Gengala
Kennel. His breeder, Colleen
Khoury has successfully line bred to this dog over a number of
generations.
Ch. Khandhu Laser Lightfoot is another important stud and show dog of
the early 1980's. He won
four Specialty Best in Shows and a number of Specialty C.C.'s. He was
sired by Ch. Alaqadar de
Fauves. He sired two Specialty Best in Show winners; Ch. Khandhu Cracker
Jack for his breeders the
Hewitts, and the bitch Ch. Raushan Copa Cabana who had eight Specialty
Best in Shows and five
Runner-Up or Opposite Sex in Shows at Specialties and a total of thirty
one Best in Shows for owner
Mrs. Margaret Pope.
The American import Ch. Sanallah's Man of the Moment came to Queensland
in the mid 70's for
George and Shirley Hansen. He produced some good winners in that State
including the Specialty
C.C. winners Ch. Jallal Hilight for Mr. & Mrs D. McCauley and Ch.
Khandhu Amazing Grace for the
Hewitts.
The self masked cream import, Ch Kabik's Limelite of Aries (U.S.A.)
arrived at Gengala in 1980 and
was a very successful stud dog producing twenty eight champions as well
as winning three Specialties
and other Best in Shows. He produced two Specialty Best in Show winners
Ch. Pierhelo Rough N
Tough (sire of the Specialty winner Ch. Jacosta Nite Moves) and Ch.
Pierhelo Cointreau as well as a
number of Specialty C.C. and all-breeds Best in Show winners. He was
particularly successful when
mated to the daughters of Ch. Quom Star Spangld Banner and the Hickie's
have line bred on this
combination, more recently combining with the progeny of Ch. Kabik's
the Candidate (U.S.A.) - a
brother to Am. Ch. Kabik's the Front Runner and similarly bred to
Limelite.
Ch. Kabik's the Candidate (U.S.A.) was imported by Les Bradney and Tom
Tancred (Kelzarki) and
Jan O'Donnell (Mikshar) and he produced a number of Champions including
the well performed Ch.
Aboukir Calypso Kate who had ten All -Breeds Best in Shows and two Royal
C.C.'s. It was when
Don Day repeated the mating that produced Kate that he got Ch. Aboukir
High Priority ( Day,
Sinclair & Hickie). This dog was retired in early 1995 with a total of
ninety Best in Shows including
Royals and three Specialties. He has left a legacy of Champions ( mostly
under the Gengala prefix )
including two Specialty Best in Show winners - Ch Gengala High Speed and
Ch. Gengala Hijacked.
